The aircraft, which had reached near Abu Dhabi airspace, was diverted back as a safety precaution after the crew reported a technical issue.

Upon safe landing at BLR, the aircraft underwent technical inspection and was cleared for takeoff later that day at 2:30 PM. A British Airways spokesperson confirmed the event, stating the decision to return was made out of caution and that passenger safety remains the airline’s top priority.

A passenger on board, Satish Medapati, posted updates on the social media platform ‘X’, stating that the plane had returned, but passengers received limited information during the wait. His post did not mention any distress or discomfort among passengers.

The incident coincided with broader disruptions at London Heathrow Airport (LHR), where a fire-induced power outage at a nearby substation on May 21, 2025, caused significant operational delays.

Although early reports indicated that the airport might remain closed through Friday, British Airways clarified that it operated about 90% of its scheduled flights on Saturday.

The airline also assured travelers via its official ‘X’ account (@British_Airways) that near-normal operations were expected by Sunday. Despite the challenges, most customers were successfully transported to their destinations, reflecting the carrier’s operational resilience.

Photo: By Anna Zvereva from Tallinn, Estonia – British Airways, G-YMMS, Boeing 777-236 ER, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=87549684

Similar Incident

A British Airways flight from Washington, DC, to London made an emergency landing in Boston on April 26, 2025, after a suspected bird strike and reports of smoke in the cabin.

British Airways Flight 216, a Boeing 777 operating from Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Heathrow Airport (LHR), took off at 5:36 PM Eastern Time.

Roughly 90 minutes into the transatlantic journey, the flight crew detected unusual cabin fumes and suspected a bird strike, prompting immediate diversion to Boston Logan International Airport (BOS).

The aircraft landed safely at 7:30 PM with no reported injuries. A Massachusetts Port Authority spokesperson later confirmed that a bird strike did occur but noted that the aircraft landed without incident. British Airways emphasized that the diversion was a precautionary response in accordance with its safety procedures.

After the aircraft reached the gate, engineers initiated a comprehensive inspection to determine any operational impact and ensure the aircraft’s structural and mechanical integrity. The airline coordinated overnight accommodations and alternative travel arrangements for passengers, minimizing disruption.

At 8:45 PM, following a full technical assessment, the flight departed Boston for London, with an estimated arrival time at Heathrow of 6:15 AM GMT. The airline commended the flight crew for their decisive response and thanked passengers for their cooperation during the emergency.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation to verify the source of the smoke and confirm whether the suspected bird strike contributed to the incident.

Stay tuned with us.
