BENGALURU-<\/strong> Kempegowda International Airport (BLR)<\/a> in Bengaluru, India, has achieved a remarkable environmental milestone, becoming the first airport in Asia<\/strong> to receive the prestigious Level 5 Carbon Accreditation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recognition, effective from May 5, 2024<\/strong>, marks a significant advancement in the aviation industry’s sustainability efforts across the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bengaluru Int’l Airport Carbon Accreditation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Level 5 Accreditation was formally presented to Bengaluru Airport (BLR)<\/a> representatives during the Airports Council International (ACI)<\/a> Asia-Pacific & Middle East Regional Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The assembly, which took place in New Delhi from April 15 to 17, provided the backdrop for this groundbreaking announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL)<\/a> released an official statement on Thursday detailing the achievement. The accreditation recognises the airport’s exceptional progress in reducing its environmental impact through systematic carbon management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emission Reduction Targets<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Bengaluru Airport (BLR) earned the Level 5 status<\/strong> by achieving a remarkable 95.6 per cent<\/strong> reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This substantial reduction has enabled the airport to reach net-zero status<\/strong> for these emission categories a full 7 years ahead of its original 2030 target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Environmental experts classify carbon emissions into different scopes. Scope 1 emissions encompass direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by the organisation, such as fuel combustion and company vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scope 2 emissions refer to indirect emissions from purchased electricity, steam, heating, and cooling consumed by the reporting company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
