NASHIK-<\/strong> Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL)<\/a> has commenced overhauling A320<\/a> family aircraft at its Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Ozar, Nashik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This marks HAL’s first venture into civilian aircraft<\/strong> maintenance, expanding beyond its traditional role of servicing military aircraft like the Sukhoi Su-30 MKI<\/a> fighter jets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HAL Overhauls A320 in Nashik<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Last month, HAL delivered its first overhauled A320 Neo<\/a> aircraft to IndiGo Airlines (6E)<\/a>. The state-owned company is currently servicing two Embraer<\/a> aircraft from another private airline, with completion expected by the end of April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HAL established a partnership with Airbus in November 2023 <\/strong>to create a C-check<\/strong> facility for A320 fleet maintenance in Nashik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This facility operates under the regulations of both the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)<\/a> and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)<\/a>. The collaboration includes consultancy services, tool supply, and technical literature for aircraft maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The overhaul process for the first A-320 aircraft began in March and was completed within the same month. Company sources reported, “The Airbus team from France visited HAL, Nashik, on many occasions and performed a gap assessment of the facility. The Airbus consultancy team provided tailored recommendations for the upgradation of the MRO facility and also performed upskilling workshops for the HAL team.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HAL has implemented training programs to ensure technical proficiency for civilian aircraft maintenance. The company sources noted that HAL “initiated skilling of the MRO team through the BAMEC certification course<\/strong> and Level-III A-320 type training<\/strong> in collaboration with IndiGo.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following DGCA approval, HAL Nashik completed the MRO task for IndiGo’s A320 Neo and delivered the aircraft in record time in March 2025.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Economic Impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Manish Rawal, vice-president of the Nashik Industries & Manufacturers<\/strong> Association (NIMA) and chairperson of the organization’s aviation committee, views this development positively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“HAL already overhauls defense aircraft. However, this work on civilian jets will provide business opportunities to the vendors engaged in manufacturing aviation spare parts. Moreover, it will also generate jobs,” Rawal stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The expansion into civilian aircraft maintenance represents a significant diversification for the defense public sector undertaking, potentially opening new revenue streams while supporting India’s growing aviation maintenance sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
