CHENNAI<\/strong>– The Tamil Nadu government plans to issue a tender within the next month to choose a developer for the new \u20b920,000 crore Parandur airport project. The new Parandur Airport <\/strong>facility will function as Chennai’s<\/a> second airport, with a capacity for 100 million passengers yearly. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tender announcement comes as the project awaits final in-principle approval from the Central government, which sources say could arrive at any moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parandur Airport Progress<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Land Acquisition<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The government has already begun acquiring land for the Greenfield airport, located approximately 70 km west of Chennai (MAA).<\/strong> Landowners are receiving substantial compensation packages, reportedly five to six times the current market value of their properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once built, the Parandur airport will operate as Chennai’s second air travel hub, designed to accommodate 100 million travelers each year<\/strong>. Its infrastructure will feature two runways, multiple terminal buildings for passengers, connecting taxiways, designated aircraft parking spaces, and a dedicated cargo handling section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ongoing Local Opposition<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Despite the generous compensation offers, residents continue their protests against the airport project. Thursday marked the 983rd consecutive day of demonstrations by villagers who fear their livelihoods will be negatively impacted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project affects 13 villages including Ekanapuram, Nelvoy, Valathur, Ediayarpakkam, Madapuram, and Akkammapuram in the Parandur area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Villagers have organized a rotation system where different groups take turns protesting each evening, according to sources familiar with the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Need for a Second Airport<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Chennai Greenfield Airport<\/strong> is a planned greenfield airport project that would serve the Tamil Nadu state of India’s Chennai Metropolitan Area. It is intended to be constructed in the Kanchipuram district<\/strong>, close to Parandur. Parandur Airport will function as a backup airport to the current Chennai International Airport (MAA).<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Parandur airport project addresses growing capacity constraints at the existing Chennai airport (MAA), which currently handles over 2.2 crore (22 million) passengers <\/strong>annually. Even after the ongoing modernization work is completed, the current Chennai airport (MAA) will only be able to accommodate 3.5 crore (35 million) passengers<\/strong> yearly for the next 7 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ministry of Defence<\/a> has already granted a No Objection Certificate (NOC)<\/strong> for the site clearance of the new Parandur airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
