DELHI\u2014<\/strong> India signed a massive Rs 62,700 crore deal on Friday, March 28, 2025, to buy 156 <\/strong>locally-made ‘Prachand’ <\/strong>light combat helicopters (LCHs)<\/a> from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL)<\/a>. This marks the largest-ever such deal, finalized shortly after receiving approval from the Prime Minister-led Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CCS approved the purchase of 90 LCHs for the Army <\/strong>and 66 for the Indian Air Force.<\/strong> ‘Prachand’ is specially designed for operations in elevated terrain. Currently, 45% of their components are made in India, with plans to increase this to 65% by the project’s end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Production Details & Timeline<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The 156 new helicopters will add to the 15 LCHs (10 for IAF and 5 for Army) <\/strong>already brought into service under a Rs 3,887 crore contract in 2022. According to the contract signed, the helicopters will be built at HAL facilities in Bengaluru and Tumkur, Karnataka. The deal, worth Rs 62,700 crore, excluding taxes, includes associated equipment and training costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The deliveries will begin in three years, with 30 LCHs to be manufactured per year,” a defense official told the Times of India<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Prachand’ Capabilities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

‘Prachand’ LCH combat helicopters come armed with 20mm turret guns, 70mm rocket systems, and air-to-air missiles for combat operations. Especially in high-altitude areas like eastern Ladakh and Siachen Glacier along the borders with China and Pakistan.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Prachand’ is India’s first locally designed and developed combat helicopter capable of operating at altitudes over 5,000 meters (16,400 feet)<\/strong>. The highly maneuverable 5.8-tonne helicopter<\/strong> currently has 45% indigenous content by value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prachand is powered by two Shakti engines developed with the French company Safran Group. It can target enemy infantry troops, tanks, bunkers, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)<\/a>.
