ENTEBBE-<\/strong> Uganda Airlines (UR)<\/a> firmly denied reports claiming that British authorities blocked its newly announced direct flights from Entebbe (EBB) <\/strong>to London Gatwick (LGW)<\/a>. In a statement released on March 23, the airline confirmed its Foreign Carriers Permit remains valid and has not been revoked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline assured passengers that preparations continue for the inaugural flight to London Gatwick (LGW) scheduled for May 18<\/strong>. The route is a significant step in its international expansion strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allegations Causing London Route Suspension<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Reports claim Uganda Airlines’ Entebbe (EBB)-London Gatwick (LGW) route was suspended. This was following intervention by British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who cited human rights concerns in Uganda<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to these allegations, Lammy stated Britain “will not allow the skies of the UK to become a welcome mat for regimes that brutalize their people.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The suspension reportedly followed a tense meeting between Lammy and Uganda’s ambassador at the UK Foreign Office. Critics point to President Museveni’s nearly 40-year rule, with family members in key positions, as evidence of democratic failings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uganda Airlines (UR) announced the new route on March 18, marking its first entry into the European market<\/strong>. This was in the hope to establish direct air links between Uganda and the UK after nearly a decade.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jenifer Bamuturaki, CEO of Uganda Airlines, called the development a breakthrough moment following years of planning and overcoming challenges, including delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline highlighted that it had prepared for the London route by expanding its African network to 14 destinations. The airline expects the Airbus A330-800neo’s<\/a> cargo capacity to support growing Ugandan exports to the UK, which were valued at $22.6 million in 2024. Plans to introduce a dedicated freighter aim to further enhance trade opportunities between the two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minister added that the route partially fulfils President Museveni’s vision for Uganda Airlines as an economic catalyst <\/strong>creating essential air bridges between Uganda and key markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the speculation, Uganda Airlines maintains that London operations remain on schedule, with ticket sales and flight preparations proceeding as planned. British authorities have not issued any public statement confirming or denying whether the route is under review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
