BENGALURU- <\/strong>Boeing<\/a> has laid off between 150 and 180 employees at its Boeing India Engineering Technology Center (BIETC) in Bengaluru as part of th global workforce reduction strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The confirmation came directly from Dr. Brendan Nelson, Boeing’s Senior Vice President and President of Boeing Global, in an interview with Times of India<\/a><\/em>. “We are right-sizing the company. As part of that, 150-180 Boeing employees in India have been laid off,” Nelson stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boeing Lays off Employees in India<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The layoffs represent a small percentage of Boeing’s substantial Indian workforce. Of the company’s approximately 7,000 employees in India, nearly 6,500 are based at BIETC facilities in Bengaluru and Chennai. These centres perform advanced aerospace engineering work and support Boeing’s global engineering operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bengaluru campus, which opened in January 2024<\/strong>, represents one of Boeing’s largest investments outside the United States. Despite the current reductions, Nelson emphasized that the layoffs were strategically implemented to minimize disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“None of the positions that we’ve removed impact in any way on the customers, or on the government,” Nelson explained. “We’ve been very careful to make sure that what we do in India has been extremely strategic. Anything that would hurt customers, safety, quality\u2014we haven’t touched any work that’s going to affect those areas.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boeing in India<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Despite the cutbacks, India remains central to Boeing’s recovery strategy. The company currently employs about 7,000 people directly in India<\/strong>, with an additional 7,000 workers through approximately 320 supply chain partners, bringing Boeing’s total employment impact in India to around 14,000 jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We’ve got about 24,000 employees outside the US and more than a quarter of those are in India<\/strong>. This is the biggest footprint that we have outside the US,” Nelson noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boeing Global Workforce Reduction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Indian layoffs are part of Boeing’s broader global downsizing effort that has reduced the company’s total workforce by approximately 10%, eliminating around 17,000 positions<\/strong> worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The restructuring aims to align the company’s size with its current financial and economic challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The company overall downsized 10%. We’ve got to have the right size for the company, to make sure it’s consistent with the financial and economic challenges that we face,” Nelson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leadership Focus on Global Operations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Kelly Ortberg, who became Boeing’s President and CEO in August amid significant company challenges, has prioritized delivery execution, company stabilization, and future planning while maintaining safety standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Nelson, India was among the first three countries Ortberg chose to visit after taking the helm, alongside Australia and Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That is a reflection of his commitment to globalizing our company and to India specifically,” Nelson said, adding that Ortberg was “most impressed with everything he saw in India, especially the people and the quality and complexity of the work being done here.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Boeing works to increase aircraft production\u2014a development eagerly anticipated by Indian customers including Air India Group (AI)<\/a> and Akasa (QP)<\/a>\u2014the company suggests that hiring may resume once production stabilizes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
