CHENNAI-<\/strong> An IndiGo Airlines (6E)<\/a> Airbus A321 aircraft, registered as VT-IBI, experienced a tail strike while landing at Chennai airport (MAA) on Saturday (March 8, 2025), forcing the aircraft to be grounded for inspection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident occurred during a routine Mumbai (BOM)-Chennai (MAA) flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IndiGo Tail Strike at Chennai<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The airline promptly reported the occurrence to authorities, and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Board (AAIB) has launched an investigation into the matter. This marks the latest in a series of similar incidents for IndiGo, which has recorded eight tail strikes with its A321 fleet\u2014the longer variant of the A320 family\u2014in the past 18 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“On March 8, 2025, an IndiGo Airbus A321 aircraft<\/a> tail touched the runway during landing at Chennai airport,” the airline confirmed in an official statement. “The aircraft is grounded and will be back in operations post necessary repairs and clearance.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company emphasized its commitment to safety standards, stating, “At IndiGo, the safety of our customers, crew, and aircraft is our top priority. We operate with the highest standards of safety.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline also apologized for subsequent flight cancellations resulting from the grounding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notably, this is not the first incident involving this specific aircraft. The same A321, registered as VT-IBI, experienced a previous tail strike last September and had only returned to service approximately one month ago after an extended grounding period<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recent Incidents<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An IndiGo Airlines flight successfully executed a standard safety procedure during its landing approach at Bengaluru Airport on Sunday, causing temporary concern among passengers. Flight 6E498 departed from Jaipur Airport at 11:50 am and arrived in Bengaluru airspace at approximately 2:37 pm IST.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft briefly touched down on the runway before immediately ascending again, performing what aviation professionals term a “go-around.” This maneuver represents a critical safety protocol implemented when pilots determine landing conditions are not optimal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Passengers experienced moments of anxiety during the unexpected ascent. The flight crew promptly addressed passenger concerns, explaining that the go-around constituted a routine safety measure and confirming the aircraft operated within normal parameters. Despite these reassurances, at least one passenger reported continued apprehension throughout the remainder of the journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft circled Bengaluru Airport for approximately 20 minutes before successfully completing a safe landing. IndiGo Airlines sources attributed the go-around to an unstable approach, emphasizing their prioritization of passenger safety above all considerations. The airline confirmed the aircraft encountered no technical malfunctions during the flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a separate incident, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation has suspended IndiGo pilots involved in a tail strike incident that occurred at Delhi Airport on September 9, 2024. This incident affected IndiGo Airlines flight 6E6054, an Airbus A321neo with registration VT-IBI, operating on the Delhi to Bengaluru route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft remained grounded for eight days following the incident. The DGCA has not specified the duration of the pilots’ suspension as its investigation continues. Sources informed MoneyControl that both pilots have been grounded pending the conclusion of the investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
