GURUGRAM-<\/strong> India’s largest carrier, IndiGo Airlines (6E)<\/a> announced its entry into non-stop long-haul international service on Thursday, March 6, 2025, with flights to Manchester (MAN) and Amsterdam (AMS) beginning July 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This move accelerates the airline’s previously disclosed European expansion plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IndiGo Adds Amsterdam and Manchester<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The carrier will operate thrice-weekly service to both European destinations pending “completion of all operational preparedness and regulatory approvals,” according to the company’s statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These routes will utilize a wet-leased Boeing 787-9 aircraft<\/a> from Norwegian carrier Norse Atlantic, featuring 56 of IndiGo’s new “Stretch” seats with enhanced legroom and improved cushioning, plus 282 standard economy seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IndiGo confirmed three additional Boeing 787-9 aircraft will join its fleet during the second half of 2025. The airline currently operates primarily A320 narrow-body aircraft, supplemented by Boeing 737 MAX jets leased to address groundings related to Pratt & Whitney engine issues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

IndiGo also utilizes two wet-leased Boeing 777 aircraft from Turkish Airlines for Istanbul flights from Mumbai and Delhi, providing one-stop connections to 35 European and American destinations through their codeshare agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The newly leased wide-body aircraft will help bridge capability gaps caused by delayed delivery of Airbus A321 XLR aircraft. These long-range narrow-body planes were originally scheduled for 2024-2025 delivery but face postponement due to certification challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers previously outlined plans to connect European destinations like Athens and Rome, as well as Seoul, using the XLR aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Collectively, these aircraft will enable IndiGo to make an early entry into the long-haul market and establish itself in Europe while the airline awaits the delivery of its Airbus A321 XLR<\/a>, and A350-900 aircraft from 2027 onwards,” the company stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IndiGo placed its first wide-body aircraft order in April last year, purchasing 30 Airbus A350-900 jets to expand its long-haul international network. These aircraft are expected to begin entering service in 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delhi-Bangkok flight with 787<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

IndiGo launched its first wide-body Boeing 787 aircraft service on the Delhi-Bangkok<\/a> route on March 1, 2025. The inaugural flight departed from Delhi as part of the carrier’s global expansion strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers and company representatives celebrated the milestone with passengers at Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport, marking the occasion with a cake-cutting ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Delhi-Bangkok service utilizes IndiGo’s wide-body aircraft equipped with IndiGoStretch seating, designed to provide enhanced comfort during long-haul flights. This deployment aligns with the airline’s broader initiative to expand international travel options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IndiGo confirmed earlier this week its plans to add three more Boeing 787-9 aircraft through a damp lease agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways<\/a>. These planes will arrive in India during the second half of 2025 and will serve long-haul international routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the damp lease arrangement with Norse Atlantic Airways, the lessor will provide maintenance along with the aircraft, but not crew or insurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“IndiGo’s partnership with Norse Atlantic Airways is a critical part of our plan to strengthen our international network and establish a presence in the European market,” stated Elbers. “As we work towards becoming a global player by 2030, our continued expansion reflects our strategic commitment to both India and international growth.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
