SHANNON-<\/strong> A United Airlines (UA)<\/a> Boeing 767-300(ER) jet executed an emergency landing at Shannon Airport (SNN) today (February 8, 2024) following a medical emergency declaration during its transatlantic journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft, operating as flight UA53 <\/strong>from Zurich (ZRH) to Washington (IAD), carried 151 passengers and crew members when the incident occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United Flight Emergency Landing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The emergency situation developed approximately two hours into the flight when the aircraft was positioned 80 kilometers off Ireland’s South West coast, The Journal.ie <\/a><\/em>reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flight crew immediately established contact with Irish air traffic controllers, declaring a medical emergency and requesting clearance for an emergency landing at Shannon Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shannon Airport authorities initiated their emergency response protocols upon receiving notification of the incoming aircraft. The National Ambulance Service mobilized emergency medical resources to meet the flight upon arrival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to the aircraft’s overweight landing status, Shannon Airport’s Fire and Rescue Service deployed to strategic positions along the runway, adhering to standard safety procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While initial plans called for the stranded passengers to resume their journey on a replacement aircraft from London<\/a>, United Airlines subsequently canceled the continuation flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United Airlines flight executed a safe landing at Shannon Airport at 1:35 PM, with airport fire service vehicles escorting the aircraft from touchdown to its terminal position. Emergency response teams, including ambulance paramedics and airport personnel, awaited the aircraft’s arrival at the terminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Airport fire crews conducted a thorough inspection of the aircraft’s undercarriage, specifically examining the braking system for potential overheating from the overweight landing. The fire service maintained their position alongside the aircraft for an extended period following touchdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

National Ambulance Service personnel arrived at the scene with both an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle. The medical team assessed and treated the affected passengers before transferring them to University Hospital Limerick for further medical attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While United Airlines initially planned to deploy a replacement aircraft from London to continue the journey, this contingency plan faced cancellation. The rescheduled departure, originally set for 7:00 PM, also underwent cancellation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United Airlines has now arranged overnight hotel accommodations for the stranded passengers. The revised travel plan indicates the passengers will resume their journey to Washington on Sunday evening, marking a significant delay in their travel schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
