DELHI-<\/strong> Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu announced ambitious plans to construct 50 new airports within the next five years, with a strategic focus on establishing Delhi (DEL)<\/a> as a major international aviation hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking with ANI <\/a><\/em>at the World Economic Forum 2025, Naidu emphasized India’s commitment to expanding its aviation ecosystem through international partnerships and technological advancements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India Eyes 50 New Airports<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The minister highlighted India’s remarkable aviation sector growth, which has achieved an annual growth rate exceeding 10 percent <\/strong>over the past decade. India has already emerged as the third-largest domestic aviation network, attracting significant international interest from potential investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naidu outlined a two-year timeline to transform Delhi into a critical aviation hub, engaging with airlines and international partners to develop comprehensive transit networks and passenger services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government’s strategy includes increasing airport infrastructure, expanding passenger fleet capabilities, and addressing the growing domestic and international air travel demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to reports, there are close to 140 airports in operation in India<\/a> as of 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government aims to achieve 1 percent SAF blending in international flights by 2027, escalating to 5 percent by 2030, with plans to produce 5 million tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naidu highlighted India’s commitment to creating a robust aviation ecosystem, attracting significant international interest from investors and global leaders. The ministry is collaborating with various government departments, including the Ministry of Home Affairs, to streamline and expedite aviation development initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aviation Minister’s View on Indian Aviation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, at 37 the youngest cabinet minister, is challenging the current aviation market dominated by IndiGo <\/a>and Air India<\/a>. Speaking at the ET India Ascends event, Naidu pledged to break the existing duopoly and streamline entry barriers for new airlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, Air India Group, after integrating Vistara, owns over 28% market share, while IndiGo commands 60-62%, collectively controlling 90% of the market. Naidu emphasized that such market concentration disadvantages travelers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minister outlined three strategic initiatives to transform India’s aviation landscape: financial support mechanisms, state-level collaboration, and price control strategies. These approaches aim to support struggling airlines, encourage state-driven airport development, and prevent excessive airfare pricing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naidu’s comprehensive strategy includes active government monitoring of airline financial health, implementing the UDAN scheme to support unprofitable routes, and maintaining continuous dialogue with carriers. The ministry will request state governments to reduce aviation fuel taxes and track airfare patterns to ensure market accessibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
