PHOENIX-<\/strong> The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into a critical near-collision incident between two passenger jets at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) on Saturday (Jan 11, 2025).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event involved Delta Air Lines (DL)<\/a> Flight DL1070 <\/strong>from Detroit and United Airlines (UA)<\/a> Flight UA1724<\/strong> from San Francisco, carrying a combined total of 374 passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident occurred at 11 a.m. local time when both aircraft received simultaneous collision warnings during their landing approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flight data from Flightradar24 <\/em>reveals the aircraft came dangerously close, with vertical separation dropping to 425 feet before the horizontal distance narrowed to less than a quarter mile within seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Air traffic control recordings received by CBS News<\/em> document the sequence of events. Controllers initially cleared the United Boeing 737 to land on Runway 7 right, while directing the Delta Airbus A330<\/a> to position for landing on Runway 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The situation triggered automated collision warnings in both cockpits, with urgent “descend, descend” commands recorded in the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quick intervention from air traffic control through corrective instructions enabled both aircraft to execute safe landings. The Delta flight carried 245 passengers on its Airbus A330, while the United Boeing 737<\/a> transported 129 passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
