Shortly after takeoff, the flight crew requested to maintain a Flight Level of 6,000 feet (FL060) due to a technical problem, initially planning to continue along the departure route.

However, they later modified their decision to remain near the airport, subsequently climbing to FL130 (13,000 feet) while maintaining below-minimum clean speed.

The aircraft performed fuel dumping procedures over the North Sea before executing a safe landing on runway 18R. The flight landed safely back in Amsterdam at 3:16 PM UTC, almost 90 minutes later from its departure.

The aircraft involved in the incident is a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, registered as N819AN. Further, it is a 7.8-year-old aircraft powered by GEnX engines.

The technical issue was related to flap operations. However, after landing, the airline decided to operate a flight the next day and they faced a second trouble.

Photo: Alan Wilson | Flickr

Second Issue

American Airlines tried to operate a return flight the next day as AA9605 from Amsterdam at 1:30 PM local time and was scheduled to arrive in Philadelphia at 3:32 PM local time.

However, the flight crew reported that there was a hydraulic oil leak from the aircraft.
