SEATTLE-<\/strong> Hawaiian Airlines (HA) <\/a>now owned by Alaska Air Group flight from Seattle Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to Daniel K Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu made a U-turn immediately after takeoff amid smoke in the cockpit<\/strong> on December 30, 2024<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honolulu-based carrier operates two daily flights between Honolulu and Seattle and codeshare with other carriers for five additional daily flights. It serves this route with a mix of Airbus A321 and A330 aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hawaiian Flight U-Turn to Seattle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to FlightRadar24 data, Hawaiian Airlines flight HA21 <\/strong>took off from Seattle <\/a>at 8:41 PM UTC (12:41 PM local time).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Immediately after takeoff, the flight crew saw smoke inside the cockpit. They alerted SeaTac ATC about the situation and decided to safely return back at SEA. It landed back in Seattle at 9:00 PM UTC (1:00 PM local time)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flight was scheduled to arrive in Honolulu at 12:35 PM local time, however, it was canceled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flight was operated by Airbus A330-243 aircraft<\/strong>, registered as N393HA<\/strong>. Further, it is an 11.6-year-old aircraft powered by Rolls-Royce engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft has a dual seating configuration with 260 economy class and 18 first-class seats (A total of 278). However, the exact details of the passengers and crew are not known yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)<\/a> has recorded the incident on its Aviation Accidents and Incidents page and has issued the following preliminary statement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hawaiian Airlines Flight 21 safely returned to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport around 1 p.m. local time on Monday, Dec. 30, after the crew reported smoke in the flight deck. The Airbus A330 was heading to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu.<\/p>FAA Statement on Hawaiian Incident<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, the FAA has said that they will investigate the incident to find out the cause of it and will issue a detailed report in the coming months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similar Incidents<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is not the sole incident, cockpit smoke-related incidents are on the rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United Airlines (UA)<\/a> executed an emergency diversion to Albuquerque International Airport (ABQ) on December 28, 2024, after smoke emerged in the cockpit during its Chicago O’Hare (ORD) to Phoenix International Airport (PHX) service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Wizz Air (W6) <\/a>aircraft diverted to Stockholm Arlanda Airport on November 16, 2024, when cabin crew detected smoke while operating flight W61771 between Gdansk and Tromso. The incident occurred during the cruise phase at 35,000 feet, approximately 30 minutes after its 6:04 PM departure from Gdansk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delta Air Lines (DL)<\/a> flight DL850 executed a precautionary landing at Raleigh-Durham International Airport on November 6, 2024, during its Atlanta to Washington D.C. service due to cockpit fumes. Delta management confirmed the diversion represented standard safety protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aviation industry witnessed similar incidents in 2023. A Spirit Airlines (NK)<\/a> Airbus A320 performed an emergency landing in Fort Lauderdale on August 3 during its Orlando to Bogota flight, resulting in injuries to four cabin crew members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier that year, on July 4, a United Airlines Boeing 777 returned to Los Angeles International Airport after smoke manifested on the flight deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
