Kennedy International Airport (JFK) due to an overflowing lavatory. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the incident.

Data from Flight Radar 24 shows the Boeing 777-200(ER), registered as N751AN, departed Dallas at 10:53 PM UTC. After approximately two hours and 30 minutes in the air, a flight attendant reported the lavatory issue while the aircraft was flying over New York state. Following standard safety protocols, the crew opted for a precautionary landing at JFK. The plane touched down at 2:23 AM UTC after burning excess fuel to ensure a safe landing.

The 23.4-year-old aircraft, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 800 engines, was scheduled to continue its journey to Madrid but was grounded due to maintenance concerns. Passengers were delayed as the airline arranged for a replacement aircraft.

An American Airlines spokesperson confirmed the diversion with Aviation A2Z, stating:

On Aug. 7, American Airlines flight 36 with service from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Madrid (MAD) diverted to New York (JFK) due to a maintenance issue.
