A chest infection in 2010 led to his type 1 diabetes diagnosis, resulting in the loss of his aviation medical clearance. Determined to continue his aviation career, Robertson pursued a medical degree with a focus on aviation.

He obtained clearance to fly small, unpassenged aircraft and meticulously documented his blood sugar levels during flights. In 2016, Robertson submitted comprehensive records to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), including data from UK and Canadian aviation regulators.

After a three-year review, CASA modified its policies, reinstating Robertson’s full medical clearance in 2020. His advocacy enabled other Australian pilots with type 1 diabetes to continue their careers.

In 2024, Robertson completed re-training as a Boeing 737 First Officer, 14 years after his initial medical setback.

Photo: Qantas

First Pilot in Australia with Diabetes

Jeremy Robertson pursued an engineering degree after losing his pilot career. Realizing engineering was not his passion, he transitioned to medical studies. While working as a junior doctor, he continued flying for a skydiving company.

After discovering Canada and the UK permitted commercial pilots with type 1 diabetes, Robertson strategically worked to change Australian regulations. In 2017, he submitted a proposal to lift the ban on diabetic commercial pilots, which was approved, making him the first type 1 diabetic to hold a class 1 medical certification.

Robertson now balances his career as an aviation medical doctor in New South Wales and a flying instructor. His long-term goal involves returning to a major airline in a medical and flying capacity. Robertson credits insulin for enabling his professional and personal life, highlighting how modern treatments provide unprecedented flexibility.

He advocates for diabetes research, emphasizing the need to find a cure beyond current management strategies. Robertson’s journey represents a testament to professional resilience and medical innovation.

Stay tuned with us.
