TAIPEI-<\/strong> As previously reported, China Airlines (CI) <\/a>will either choose the Airbus A350-1000 or Boeing 777X but now a source told Reuters that new orders will be split equally between the two giant manufacturers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Taiwanese carrier aims to replace its aging fleet of 10 Boeing 777-300ERs while expanding capacity for future growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China Airlines New Orders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The airline evaluates Boeing’s 777X and the Airbus A350-1000 for its fleet renewal program. An industry source told Reuters reveal China Airlines could order up to 20 passenger jets, dividing the order equally between both manufacturers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The potential deal carries an estimated value of $4 billion<\/strong> after standard industry discounts, according to Cirium Ascend’s delivery price calculations. A separate freighter order remains under consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The timing of this decision coincides with Donald Trump’s return to the U.S. presidency, as Taiwan seeks to maintain strong diplomatic relations with the United States. The freighter selection process particularly reflects these geopolitical considerations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China Airlines has confirmed its fleet planning process, stating it “plan based on market demand and corporate developments, and carefully study the relevant technical and commercial conditions to select the most appropriate aircraft type.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final decision awaits approval from China Airlines’ board of directors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taiwan-US Relationship<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Taiwan-U.S. relations impact China Airlines’ aircraft procurement decisions, despite the airline’s claims of independence in fleet planning. Trump’s previous administration backed Taiwan, but his recent campaign statements about Taiwan’s semiconductor industry and defense payments have created uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taiwan’s government has officially congratulated Trump on his victory, expressing confidence in maintaining strong bilateral relations. Industry experts identify Taiwan as a key market where diplomatic relationships influence aircraft purchase decisions, alongside technical evaluations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, China Airlines’ Chairman Hsieh Shih-chien directly addressed these concerns last month, stating the airline independently assesses and selects its aircraft. He specifically denied any political pressure influencing their fleet decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline currently operates 15 A350-900s and nine 777 freighters, showcasing its diverse fleet strategy. Chairman Hsieh Shih-chien affirms that Boeing 787 Dreamliner<\/a> deliveries will commence next year, while 11 Airbus A321s will replace older Boeing 737-800s by 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
