GURUGRAM-<\/strong> India’s largest domestic carrier, IndiGo Airlines (6E)<\/a> faced a significant financial setback as it recorded a consolidated net loss of \u20b9986.7 crore<\/strong> for the second quarter (Q2) of fiscal year 2025, marking a sharp decline from its \u20b9188.9 crore profit <\/strong>in the same period last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline in its previous quarter (Q1 2025) reported a net profit of \u20b92,728.8 crore. This is the first loss after having seven consecutive profitable quarters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IndiGo Q2 Loss and Report<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rising fuel costs and widespread aircraft groundings emerged as the primary factors behind the quarterly loss, according to the company’s exchange filing. Despite these challenges, operational revenue demonstrated strong growth, climbing 13.6% year-over-year to reach \u20b916,969.6 crore, though it fell 13% from the previous quarter’s \u20b919,570.7 crore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline maintained relatively stable operating performance, with EBITDAR reaching \u20b92,434 crore, showing only a marginal decrease from \u20b92,446.5 crore in the previous year’s corresponding quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

InterGlobe Aviation, parent of IndiGo reported that passenger ticket revenues increased 9.9% to \u20b914,359.2 crore in Q2FY25, while ancillary revenues grew 20.9% to \u20b91,875 crore compared to Q2FY24. Total expenses surged 21.9%<\/strong> to \u20b918,666.1 crore during the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline’s yield per passenger improved to \u20b94.55 from \u20b94.44 year-over-year, though the load factor decreased marginally to 82.6% from 83.3%. This indicates stronger revenue generation per passenger despite slightly lower capacity utilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CEO Remarks and Q2 Operations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo<\/strong> addressed these results by highlighting the traditionally weak second-quarter performance while emphasizing positive developments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elbers said that the airline has begun reducing its grounded aircraft count and associated costs. IndiGo continues to leverage India’s growing aviation market while maintaining its position as a cost leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pieter highlighted that IndiGo is set to launch its business-class service in two weeks, expanding its market presence. Additionally, its new loyalty program, IndiGo BluChip<\/strong>, has received favorable customer response, indicating strategic moves to enhance revenue streams and customer engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IndiGo expanded its fleet to 410 aircraft<\/strong>, adding 28 passenger aircraft during the quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fleet composition includes 41 A320ceo, 201 A320neo, 112 A321neo, 45 ATRs, three A321 freighters, Six Boeing 737s leased from Qatar Airways<\/a>, and Two 777s leased from Turkish Airlines<\/a>. Multiple aircraft categories operate under damp lease arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline maximized its operations to 2,161 daily flights<\/strong>, servicing 88 domestic and 31 international destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bomb Threat Continues<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many Indian carriers have continued to receive bomb threats<\/a> for a few weeks and IndiGo is also one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 25 domestic and international flights operated by Indian carriers received bomb threats on October 25, 2024, continuing a concerning pattern of security disruptions. IndiGo, Vistara, and SpiceJet each received threats against seven flights, while Air India<\/a> reported threats to six flights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The targeted IndiGo flights included routes connecting Kozhikode to Dammam (6E 87), Udaipur to Delhi (6E 2099), Delhi to Istanbul (6E 11), Jeddah to Mumbai (6E 58), Mumbai to Istanbul (6E 17), Hyderabad to Chandigarh (6E 108), and Pune to Jodhpur (6E 133).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The situation has escalated significantly, with more than 275 flights receiving bomb threats within 12 days. On October 24 alone, over 80 flights faced similar threats, predominantly delivered through social media platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government has initiated action by requesting data from social media platforms Meta and X regarding the hoax bomb threat messages. Technology conglomerates have been asked to assist in identifying the perpetrators, with the government emphasizing the public safety implications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu announced plans for legislative measures to combat these threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
