DELHI-<\/strong> Today on August 14, 2024, GMR-owned Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) <\/a>announced that the new Terminal 1 will open for public use on August 17, 2024. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated this terminal on March 10, 2024, as part of DIAL’s Phase 3A expansion project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DIAL has collaborated with IndiGo (6E)<\/a> and SpiceJet (SG) <\/a>to transition flight operations from Terminals 2 and 3 to the new Terminal 1. SpiceJet will relocate 13 flights to T1 on August 17, 2024. IndiGo plans to move 34 flights from T2 and T3 to T1 on September 2, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delhi Airport Terminal 1<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of DIAL, emphasized that the new T1 will significantly increase the airport’s capacity and alleviate pressure on T2 and T3. He promised improved amenities and advanced technology for a better passenger experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Terminal 1 has been non-operational since June 28, 2024. IndiGo and SpiceJet, previously the sole operators from T1, were reassigned to T2 and T3 starting June 29, 2024. These airlines have been providing regular updates to passengers about changes in flight schedules and terminal assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before its closure, T1 handled an average of 200 daily flight operations. The reopening of the modernized T1 is expected to enhance Delhi Airport’s overall efficiency and passenger handling capacity, marking a significant step in India’s aviation infrastructure development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) implements new entry procedures for SpiceJet and IndiGo passengers at its expanded terminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SpiceJet passengers must use Entry Gate A on the ground floor, while IndiGo passengers should enter through Gates 5 and 6 on the first floor. All arrivals will be directed to dedicated areas on the ground floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DIAL installs strategic signage and road markings to guide passengers. RAXA guards will assist with directions. Arriving passengers will follow the same route to exit the terminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delhi Airport<\/a> is Owned by GMR Airport Limited (64%), AAI (26%), and Fraport AG Frankfurt Airport Services Worldwide (10%). It is the busiest airport in India<\/strong> as it reported 73,673,708 passengers movement in and out of the airport. Further, it is the 9th Busiest Airport in the world<\/strong> in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part of the Expansion Project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The expansion project, initiated in 2019 based on the Master Plan 2016, addresses increased Air Traffic Movements and passenger numbers. DIAL introduces the Queue-Buster: Mobile Check-in Service to reduce waiting times at check-in counters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New terminal features include an Automated Tray Retrieval System, an Individual Carrier System, a Common Usage Self Service, Aerobridges, and Self-baggage drop kiosks. Expanded baggage reclaim carousels, multiple entry gates, and enhanced Shop and dining facilities further improve the travel experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside, passengers can access amenities such as a Prayer Room, Yoga area, Quiet zone, Group seating, charging stations, self-medication room, Baby Care rooms, and smart washrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roof Collapse<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In June 2024, heavy rain caused a portion of the roof at Delhi Airport\u2019s Terminal 1 old departure forecourt to collapse around 5 am, killing one and injuring at least four people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu<\/a>, in a statement on social media, said he is personally monitoring the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
