The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) and Air Canada remain at odds over compensation and other issues after a year of talks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite private mediation efforts in early 2024, the parties entered conciliation, indicating significant unresolved differences. Some U.S. pilots reportedly earn twice as much as their Canadian equivalents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The union&#8217;s distribution of &#8220;Strike Ready&#8221; materials to members signals a heightened state of preparedness for potential job action. This move could pressure Air Canada to improve its offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, Air Canada reports progress in negotiations with pilots, citing agreements on several items. The airline aims to finalize a deal within weeks, addressing remaining issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The potential pilot strike adds to a series of disruptions in Canadian aviation this year, including Lynx Air&#8217;s shutdown, <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/?s=WestJet\">WestJet&#8217;s (WS) <\/a>mechanic strike, and weather-related issues affecting Calgary&#8217;s airport (YYC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rick Erickson, a Calgary-based aviation analyst, describes to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/bakx-alpa-air-canada-mec-pilots-1.7293270\">CBC News<\/a><\/em> that the situation is an ongoing crisis in Canada&#8217;s airline sector. He notes Air Canada&#8217;s long period of labor stability and pilots&#8217; observations of substantial benefits gained by U.S. counterparts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pilots&#8217; previous 10-year collective agreement expired in September 2023. It was terminated early through an escape clause. This early termination reflects growing dissatisfaction among Air Canada pilots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>North American airlines, including Air Canada, experienced a sharp rise in demand post-pandemic. In an announcement, the airline confirmed that it will discontinue direct flights between Calgary and several major destinations: Ottawa, Halifax,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/?s=Los+Angeles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Los Angeles<\/a>, Honolulu, Cancun, and Frankfurt, effective by the end of October 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Air Canada\u2019s spokesperson, Peter Fitzpatrick, explained that these route cancellations are aimed at enhancing the overall operational reliability of the airline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He mentioned that the ongoing shortage of regional&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/?s=Pilots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pilots&nbsp;<\/a>within the industry will continue to affect Air Canada\u2019s regional network for a prolonged period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What are your thoughts on the issue with Pilot pay across North America?
