It landed safely back in Munich at 17:41. Lufthansa canceled the return flight from New York to Munich scheduled for the same day.

A Lufthansa spokesperson confirmed the A380 experienced a technical problem with one of its four engines. The crew chose to return to Munich as a precaution. All passengers disembarked safely and were rebooked on other flights to the US.

Despite the mid-flight issue, the problem appeared minor. The same A380 departed again for New York the next day at 13:40, expected to land at JFK at 15:44 local time.

Lufthansa’s Airbus A380, involved in the recent mid-flight turnaround, had undergone maintenance at Munich Airport for a week before its July 25 flight to New York. The aircraft, registered as D-AIMK, last flew from Los Angeles to Munich on flight LH453 before entering maintenance.

Airbus delivered this A380 to Lufthansa on March 28, 2014, though its first flight occurred on October 14, 2013.

As of May 31, the A380 had logged 32,678 flight hours and 3,635 flight cycles. These figures, provided by ch-aviation, indicate the aircraft’s extensive service history.

Photo: Lufthansa

A380 Plans for Winter

Lufthansa announces major changes to its A380 routes for winter 2024/2025.
