A group of rationalists in West Bengal exposed a long-standing mystery about a haunted Begunkodar railway station. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They camped overnight at Begunkodar Railway Station with police protection. Their investigation revealed locals created the ghost story to promote ‘ghost tourism’ and rob scared tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People stopped using the station because they thought it was haunted. Even Indian Railways listed it as haunted in their records. The station was built in 1960<\/strong>. Lachan Kumari, a Santal queen, worked with Indian Railways to set it up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, the station was important to local people. But ghost stories changed how people saw it. This shows how rumors can change the way people use public places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Begunkodar station in Purulia district gained fame in 1967. Indian Railways listed it among 10 haunted railway stations after passengers abandoned it. Reports claimed that the station master died after seeing a woman in a white saree walking on the tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The railway administration initially dismissed rumors about Begunkodar station. However, the mysterious deaths of the station master and his family fueled public fear. These deaths transformed rumors into reality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Station employees refused to work due to safety concerns. Trains stopped halting at Begunkodar railway station due to staff shortages. The railway authorities attempted to deploy new employees for the next few months. Their efforts failed as no one agreed to work at the railway station. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because of ongoing staffing issues, officials finally closed Begunkodar station. This closure reinforced local beliefs about the station’s supernatural reputation. The sequence of events demonstrates how rumors combined with unexplained incidents can impact public perception and operational decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The station remained closed for 42 years. Mamata Banerjee reopened it in 2009 during her tenure as railways minister. However, fear persisted, and no one stayed at the station after 5 PM. This atmosphere of fear fueled a thriving ‘ghost tourism’ industry. Urban youth often challenged themselves to spend a night at the supposedly haunted station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
