FORT WORTH-<\/strong> Flag carrier American Airlines (AA) <\/a>has announced a conditional purchase agreement with ZeroAvia, a leader in clean aviation innovation, for 100 hydrogen-electric engines designed to power regional jets with zero inflight emissions, producing only water vapor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, American Airlines has increased its investment in ZeroAvia<\/a>. After making its initial investment in 2022, American has now participated in ZeroAvia’s Series C financing round. This engine agreement builds on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) announced by the companies in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

American Airlines Hydrogen Engines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

ZeroAvia is developing hydrogen-electric (fuel cell-powered) engines for commercial aircraft, which promise near-zero inflight emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further, the company is currently flight testing a prototype for a 20-seat aircraft and is designing an engine for larger planes, including the Bombardier CRJ700, which American Airlines operates on select regional routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Advancing the transition of commercial aviation to a low-carbon future requires investments in promising technologies, including alternative forms of propulsion,” said American Airlines CEO Robert Isom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investment and conditional commitment to purchase innovative engine technology support American’s aggressive goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent years, American has undertaken the most extensive fleet renewal effort in commercial aviation history, resulting in the youngest mainline fleet among major U.S. network carriers and improved fuel efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

American has made industry-leading investments in sustainability, including finalizing an offtake agreement with Infinium for next-generation low-carbon sustainable aviation fuel and becoming the first customer of Graphyte’s permanent carbon removal process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ZeroAvia’s hydrogen-electric engines use hydrogen in fuel cells to generate electricity, which powers electric motors to turn the aircraft’s propellers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further, the only inflight emission is low-temperature water vapor, and these lower-intensity electrical systems have the potential to offer significant cost savings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

American Airlines has announced three additional flights from Jamaica <\/a>today for individuals seeking to leave the island before the arrival of Hurricane Beryl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
