{"id":63928,"date":"2024-05-23T11:04:13","date_gmt":"2024-05-23T05:34:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/?p=63928"},"modified":"2024-05-30T11:30:46","modified_gmt":"2024-05-30T06:00:46","slug":"southwest-fired-pilot-who-spoke-in-spanish-during-emergency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/23\/southwest-fired-pilot-who-spoke-in-spanish-during-emergency\/","title":{"rendered":"Southwest Fired Pilot Who Spoke in Spanish During 737 Engine Fire Emergency"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>NEW YORK-<\/strong> A <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/?s=Southwest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Southwest Airlines (WN) <\/a>captain has filed a complaint against the airline after being dismissed for prioritizing communication with passengers over flying the plane during an emergency last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David Legeros was in command of a <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/?s=Boeing+737\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boeing 737<\/a> when its engine burst into flames shortly after takeoff from Houston Hobby Airport in August 2023, en route to Cancun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image-138.png\" alt=\"A Southwest Airlines (WN) captain has filed a complaint against the airline after being dismissed for prioritizing communication with passengers over flying the plane during an emergency last year.\" class=\"wp-image-55750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image-138.png 1024w, https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image-138-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image-138-768x510.png 768w, https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image-138-750x498.png 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo: Aero Icarus | Flickr<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-southwest-fired-pilot\">Southwest Fired Pilot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During the emergency, the plane\u2019s right-hand engine suffered \u201csevere damage.\u201d Instead of taking control, Captain Legeros allowed the First Officer to fly the plane while he communicated with air traffic control for an emergency return landing in Houston, according to court documents obtained by <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/southwest-airlines-spanish-emergency-houston-b2549735.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Independent.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an application for an injunction against the airline filed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/?s=New+York\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York<\/a> district court in April, Legeros stated that flames were visible from inside the cabin, causing understandable terror among the passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The court documents indicate that Legeros spoke to the passengers in both Spanish and English to reassure them that the situation was under control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the incident, David Legeros stated that he was reprimanded by Southwest Airlines, as their standard operating procedures require the captain to take control of the aircraft during an emergency, according to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwivoLCC_KKGAxWos1YBHe0TBLoQFnoECCAQAQ&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.paddleyourownkanoo.com%2F2024%2F05%2F19%2Fsouthwest-airlines-stands-behind-decision-to-terminate-captain-who-was-piloting-plane-that-suffered-an-engine-fire%2F&amp;usg=AOvVaw3pM_b88TWKnnll3utzBEOO&amp;opi=89978449\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PYOK<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Legeros claimed that taking control could have caused a sudden jolt, potentially detaching the burning engine and posing a risk of it falling to the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Had Southwest Airlines chosen to reward Mr. Legeros, or even just ignore the situation, this story would be over. N793SA Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-7H4 Serial Number 27888, CC BY-SA 2.0, https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=71324128<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-strict-policy\">Strict Policy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The lawsuit asserts that Southwest now wants him to attend a meeting with their Chief Pilot, where he would be given the option to resign or be terminated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Legeros is seeking injunctive relief to prevent Southwest from compelling a psychological exam or the Fitness for Duty evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Southwest declined to comment on the specifics of the lawsuit to <em>PYOK<\/em>, citing pending litigation. However, company spokesperson Lynn Lunsford stated that Southwest stands by its decision to fire Legeros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSouthwest expects all of its pilots to follow procedures and policies that exist to protect the safety of our customers and employees,\u201d the airline said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stay tuned with us.
