DELHI-<\/strong> Over the past two years, Tata-owned Air India (AI)<\/a> has witnessed a twofold increase in its international transfer traffic, underscoring its endeavors to establish Delhi (DEL)<\/a> as a prominent hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This surge follows the introduction of new services to Europe <\/a>and East Asia. International transfer traffic denotes passengers connecting via Delhi Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Air India International Destinations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Although Air India did not disclose specific figures regarding its transfer traffic, sources indicated that international connecting passengers constitute approximately 10 percent of the airline’s foreign traffic in Delhi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Since privatization, we have expanded our flight offerings from Delhi to Birmingham, Milan, Copenhagen, Vienna, and Amsterdam in Europe, alongside new flights to Phuket, Ho Chi Minh City, and Dhaka, accompanied by frequency enhancements to Kathmandu, Colombo, Singapore, and Bangkok. These additions have resulted in a more than twofold increase in our international-to-international traffic flows,” stated Air India to Hindu BusinessLine<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, international flights in Delhi experienced nearly 10 percent year-on-year growth in May, while Air India’s flights grew by 15.5 percent, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium <\/em>data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This uptick in flights coincides with the expansion of the transfer area at Delhi Airport, which now features additional F&B outlets, frisking booths, and x-ray machines. These enhancements were implemented by the airport to bolster transit traffic flows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strengthening European Connectivity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This week, the Gurugram-based airline recently revealed plans to increase flight frequencies from Delhi to Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and Milan<\/a>. Additionally, Air India is set to inaugurate a four-time weekly service in Zurich commencing June 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zurich is the hub for Air India’s Star Alliance partner, Swiss. It also caters to other Star Alliance carriers such as Ethiopian Airlines (ET), Singapore Airlines (SQ)<\/a>, and Thai Airways (TG). Moreover, Air India has established code-share partnerships with Lufthansa and Swiss, recently extending coverage to flights to Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Partner presence is among the various factors influencing our decisions on expanding capacity to specific destinations, alongside factors like demand-supply balance, trade, and immigration flows,” remarked Air India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Under the Star Alliance framework, Lufthansa (LH)<\/a>, Swiss (LX), and Air India benefit from extensive access to both European and Indian markets through interline agreements. Furthermore, these airlines have established codeshare arrangements encompassing 24 European cities, including Amsterdam, Zurich, Dublin, Stockholm, and Prague, among others, facilitated through Frankfurt and 12 Indian cities via Delhi and Mumbai,” it elaborated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
