MUMBAI-<\/strong> On May 5, 2024, a group of permanent engineers employed by the state-owned AI Engineering Services Limited (AIESL) <\/a>threatened to initiate a strike beginning May 24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are demanding prompt implementation of overdue revisions to their salary payments. This collective represents approximately 1,700 personnel at the organization, primarily providing engineering services to Air India (AI) <\/a>and a few other domestic and International airlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AIESL Engineers Strike<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As per a notice issued, the group has proposed to commence a “strike or any form of agitation” on May 24, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This development follows less than three weeks after the group issued a warning regarding potential “industrial unrest” among its members if the salary grievances remained unaddressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The collective represents aircraft maintenance engineers, service engineers, and affiliated cadre unions consisting of permanent employees originally from Air India and Indian Airlines, who were subsequently transferred to AIESL. The company’s workforce totals over 5,000 employee<\/strong>s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In January of this year, the Aviation Industry Employees’ Guild, All India Service Engineers’ Association, Air Corporation Employees’ Union, and Indian Aircraft Technicians’ Associations came to an agreement on wage revision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delay in Salary Revision<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to the forum, the agreement, which aimed to resolve various issues such as prolonged litigations, discrepancies in pay implementation, and service conditions spanning over 15 years, remains unimplemented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, the forum highlighted the company’s recent commitment to provide arrears to contractual employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The forum criticized this action as blatant discrimination against permanent employees who have been awaiting their rightful wage revision for an extended period, branding it as an unfair labor practice. The notice is directed to the AIESL Chief Sharad Agarwal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technician Strike Called-Off After Settlement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Last month, the All India Aircarft Maintenance Engineering Union (AIAMEU)<\/a> representing the company’s Fixed Term Employment (FTE) staff had initially called for a strike on April 23<\/a>, which was later withdrawn after reaching a resolution concerning their concerns, including salary revision and promotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Memorandum of Settlement arrived under the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, read with Rule 58 of the Industrial Disputes (Central) Rules, 1957, at Nagpur on 12th April 2024 between the All India Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Union (in short AIAME Union) and the AI Engineering Services Ltd., New Delhi over the issue of notice of strike given by the AIAME Union vide their letter No. AIAMEU\/2024\/08 dated 08.04.2024 received through email dated 08.04.2024 over the charter of demands reg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AIESL is responsible for base and line maintenance, as well as the overhaul of landing gear, avionics accessories, and components, among other tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It operates under the AI Assets Holding Ltd following the disinvestment of Air India in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
