MUMBAI-<\/strong> The second airport in construction for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Navi Mumbai International Airport<\/a>, has assigned NMI<\/strong> as its IATA code by the International Air Transport Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, on May 3, when we checked the IATA Airport code list website, we found the NMI code in front of Navi Mumbai International, which will also named DB Patil International Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Navi Mumbai Airport IATA Code<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The International Air Transport Association (IATA)<\/a> assigns three-letter IATA codes to airports derived from the airport and city names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These codes predominantly incorporate letters from the city’s name. Initially, two-character airport codes were introduced in 1930, followed by the adoption of three-character codes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IATA code for the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai is BOM. While the ICAO Code for it is VABB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similar to IATA, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) assigns four-letter ICAO codes to airports. These codes are structured based on specific classifications for countries and regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first letter indicates the region where the airport is situated, while the second denotes the country. The remaining two letters are typically assigned sequentially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the ICAO is yet to assign the code for Navi Mumbai Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Update<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to our source, from December 2024 the aircraft will conduct trials and test flights. Further, the airport is expected to begin its operation in April 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NMIA<\/a> is being developed by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL). Currently, AAHL operates, manages, and develops 8 Airports in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airport is being constructed on a fixed and limited site area of 1160 Hectares<\/strong>, and PM Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone on February 18, 2018. The actual construction began in August 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first phase of  Navi Mumbai<\/a> Mumbai<\/a> International Airport is underway and will include one southern runway and Terminal 1 (T1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far, 70% of the 3.7 km long runway is completed, and the remaining will be ready in the coming months. Subsequently, the exterior work of T1 is almost completed, and they will begin the tricky interior work soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the completion of Phase 1, the NMIA will be able to handle 20 million passengers annually, which is 40% of the existing  Mumbai<\/a> Airport\u2019s total capacity. In terms of cargo, it will handle 0.8 million tonnes of cargo in a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will be one of the first airports in the country, which will be called a true multi-modal airport. This means passengers can reach the airport by all means of transportation, including 9+9 lane roads, national highways, metros, high-speed rails, and waterways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
