Harmer began her career journey in hairdressing after leaving school. Subsequently, she assumed the role of an instructor at Goodwood Flying School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following that, she dedicated two years to studying, ultimately earning her Commercial Pilots Licence (CPL) in May 1982.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After submitting applications to over 100 positions, she was eventually hired by Humberside-based Genair, where she operated Shorts 330 and 360 aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subsequently, Genair merged with British Caledonian Commuter (BR), leading Harmer to transition to the mainline carrier. She began flying BAC One-Elevens and later moved on to operate long-haul flights on the airline&#8217;s McDonnell Douglas DC-10s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1987, British Caledonian merged with <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/17\/british-airways-pilot-banned-amid-anger-issues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">British Airways (BA)<\/a>, marking the transition for Harmer to become one of merely 60 female pilots recruited by BA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"194\" height=\"259\" src=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/images-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-59457\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.749034749034749;width:507px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo-https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:In_this_house_was_born_Barbara_Harmer_%281953-2011%29_first_woman_supersonic_airline_pilot.jpg<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-supersonic-dreams\">Supersonic Dreams<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Without delay, she aimed to pilot the world&#8217;s first supersonic airliner, Concorde, and submitted her candidacy for the six-month conversion course in 1992.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon completing the training, Harmer embarked on her historic first flight between <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/07\/british-airways-pilot-mistakenly-opened-emergency-slide-at-heathrow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">London Heathrow (LHR)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/24\/american-airlines-adds-2nd-new-york-rome-flight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York (JFK)<\/a> in 1993. This groundbreaking journey catapulted her to global recognition. Subsequently, she transitioned to piloting the <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/?s=777\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boeing 777 <\/a>before opting for voluntary redundancy in 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She possessed not only exceptional aviation skills but also held qualifications as an RYA Commercial Offshore Yacht Master. Her combined experiences in both aviation and maritime domains rendered her a highly sought-after speaker for motivational and inspirational engagements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it was at 60,000 feet, cruising through the skies at 1,350mph, where she truly felt her sense of belonging. The other two were French test pilot Jacqueline Auriol and Air France pilot B\u00e9atrice Vialle. Before the aircraft retired, Vialle began flying Concorde in 2001 and completed around 35 trips between Paris and New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regrettably, Harmer passed away at Wilfrid\u2019s Hospice on February 20, 2011, at the age of only 57.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A plaque honoring Harmer&#8217;s remarkable accomplishments was revealed at 91 Staples Road, her birthplace, in September 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stay tuned with us.
