MIAMI-<\/strong> According to officials from the US State Department, a charter flight transporting US citizens pursuing shelter from escalating gang violence in Haiti has touched down at Miami International Airport (MIA)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government-chartered flight, carrying over 30 US citizens, arrived at Miami International Airport on Sunday. This action follows a prior advisory from the US Embassy in Port-au-Prince, urging American citizens to depart Haiti on time during the chaos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Charter Flight from Haiti Lands in Miami<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Passenger Avlot Quessa<\/strong>, a Boston International Airport (BOS) <\/a>resident, journeyed from the heart of the United States<\/a> to catch the charter flight, having traveled to Haiti last month for what was intended to be a weeklong visit with his mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to the Miami Herald about the nearby Caribbean nation, Quessa expressed, “It’s just terrible… The suffering you can only imagine. Haiti is my homeland, and it’s very stressful to witness the country undergoing this wave of violence and destruction… and they are our neighbors.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main airport in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, remains shuttered in the wake of recent gang assaults that have ravaged the country. Over the weekend, reports from government and aid agencies revealed looting of crucial aid supplies amidst the escalating crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Charter Flights Scheduled For Citizens<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The State Department announced on Saturday its plan to provide limited charter flights for American citizens departing from the relatively calmer city of Cap-Haitien. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ground transportation to Cap-Haitien is unavailable, and officials advise US citizens to opt for charter flights only if they can ensure safe access to Cap-Haitien airport. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Department encourages those who are still in Haiti seeking departure to utilize the crisis intake form on their website. Passengers on government-coordinated flights must sign a promissory bill for government reimbursement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marie Lucie St Fleur, 69, expressed her deep connection to Haiti and her distress over its current plight. Government officials in Miami are assisting newly arrived evacuees with their next steps. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US military deployed additional forces for the security of the US Embassy, situated in a neighborhood predominantly controlled by gangs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
