MUNICH-<\/strong> Lufthansa (LH)<\/a>, the German flag-carrier airline, has been honored as Europe\u2019s Leading Airline for 2024 at the prestigious World Travel Awards amidst a backdrop of ongoing strikes<\/a> involving thousands of cabin crew and ground staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the World Travel Awards for 2024, Lufthansa emerged victorious as Europe\u2019s leading airline and leading airline brand, surpassing competitors such as Air France (AF)<\/a>, British Airways (BA)<\/a>, and Iberia (IB)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lufthansa Europe\u2019s Top Airline in 2024<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This year marks the 12th occasion since the inception of the World Travel Awards in 1993 that Lufthansa has been honored as the premier airline in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The awards are determined by votes cast by consumers and executives in the travel<\/a> and tourism industry, with votes from the latter group carrying double weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, despite clinching the title, the awards organization provided limited insight into why Lufthansa won. The airline received its accolade during the Europe Gala Ceremony held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Berlin on March 6, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Issues Amid Strikes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Amidst Lufthansa’s celebration of its recent title, more employees are joining strike actions at airports nationwide. The Independent Cabin Crew Organisation (UFO)<\/strong> union called for cabin crew to strike on March 12 and 13, with around 20,000 employees participating. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This strike was organized before union negotiations with Lufthansa, where a 15 percent pay increase for cabin crew is demanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simultaneously, Lufthansa ground staff continued their ongoing strikes, with the third walkout in four weeks occurring just after the airline was named Europe\u2019s Leading Airline. Ver. Di is demanding a 12.5 percent pay increase for ground staff, who earn around 13 euros per hour, according to union spokesperson Marvin Reschinsky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adding to the conflict, Lufthansa announced on March 7 a profit of 2.7 billion euros in 2023, marking the third-best financial result in the history of the Lufthansa Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
