SAN DIEGO-<\/strong> Japan’s Ministry of Transport has brought attention to an incident in the United States involving a Japan Airlines (JAL)<\/a> pilot who overshot a stop line at San Diego International Airport (SAN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Details of this occurrence emerged during the visit of officials from the Japanese transport ministry to JAL’s base at Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND)<\/a> on February 13, 2024, as they conducted an examination of the carrier’s safety management system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delta A220 Aborts Takeoff<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As outlined by the ministry, the incident took place on February 6, 2024, when the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner<\/a>, scheduled to depart from SAN to Narita International Airport (NRT), mistakenly entered the wrong taxiway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following an alert from an air traffic controller, the JAL pilot took action, bringing the aircraft to a halt before it entered the runway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response to the situation, a Delta Air Lines (DL)<\/a> flight on its final approach received instructions to abort its landing and execute a go-around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pilot, acknowledging the error, stated to the ministry via NHK, \u201cI mistakenly thought I was supposed to turn further ahead. I noticed something was odd, and at the same time, the controller alerted us to the error, so I stopped the plane. But the plane had already overshot the stop line.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similar Incident<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, the transport ministry provided information on another JAL flight in November 2023 that arrived at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the ministry, after landing, the JAL aircraft turned onto an adjacent runway without clearance from air traffic control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subsequently, the pilot crossed the runway and proceeded to the parking apron. The crew cited a misunderstanding of the instructions given by the air traffic controller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JAL is currently conducting investigations into both incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
