DELHI-<\/strong> Flag carrier Ethiopian Airlines (ET)<\/a> flight operated by Boeing 787<\/a> from Delhi Airport (DEL) <\/a>to Addis Ababa (ADD) made an emergency landing back at DEL after the flight crew witnessed smoke <\/a>inside the cockpit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Africa’s largest carrier operates two daily flights between Delhi and Addis Ababa. Further, it deploys its widebody fleet, including Boeing 787-8, 787-9, and sometimes 777<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ethiopian 787 Emergency Landing at Delhi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A passenger who was on the flight informed PTI <\/em>that the aircraft returned to the airport shortly after takeoff and performed an emergency landing. The passenger, requesting anonymity, mentioned, “There was smoke, and a lot of passengers became anxious.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to PTI <\/em>sources, there were over 240 individuals on board the flight. Now, let us establish a flight timeline using FlightRadar24<\/em> data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ethiopian Airlines flight ET687<\/strong> took off from Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi (DEL) at around 9:16 PM UTC. Immediately after takeoff, the flight crew detected smoke inside the cockpit. The flight hardly reached 7,000 feet and immediately decided to make an emergency landing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subsequently, the flight returned to Delhi at around 9:32 PM UTC, within 16 minutes of departure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft involved in the incident is a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, registered as ET-AOR. Further, it is an 11-year-old aircraft and is named ‘Addis Ababa.’ As per FR24 data, the aircraft is still on the ground at Delhi Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similar Incident<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, American Airlines (AA)\u00a0<\/a>Boeing 737 operating flight AA1616 from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Kansas City, Missouri, with 171 passengers on board, reported smoke in the cabin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the initial climb at an altitude of FL310 after departing from Charlotte, the flight crew decided to return to Charlotte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They reported smoke inside the cabin, which they suspected was a result of an engine (CFM56) #2 compressor stall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the engine still running, the smoke had gradually dissipated. The aircraft safely landed back on runway 36L at Charlotte approximately 50 minutes after taking off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft involved in the incident is a Boeing <\/a>737-800, registered as N815NN. Further, it is 13.8 years old and is powered by CFMI engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
