Subsequently, pointing towards poor maintenance by a contractor as the primary cause, reported View from the Wing.

The tug involved in the accident had been plagued by “several mechanical issues.” including brake failure. It had even been involved in a collision with a guardrail just ten days prior.

On the day of the incident, as the employee began pushing back an aircraft, the tug unexpectedly accelerated and veered off course. Ultimately, crashed near gate 24, tragically pinning the man between the vehicle and the jet bridge.

One 911 call even suggested that the vehicle’s accelerator pedal had become stuck.

Photo: Twitter User

Investigation Findings

Further investigations have shown that the tug had been “marked out of service numerous times for failed brakes,” but it continued to be used without proper servicing.

The maintenance of the vehicle fell under the responsibility of Menzies Airlines. Subsequently, they are now under scrutiny for their handling of the situation.

Amidst the ongoing investigation, American Airlines’ corporate investigator, Lynn Fast, alleged that the incident was a suicide.

With 30 years of law enforcement experience, Fast reached this conclusion after contacting the employee’s father, who surprisingly apologized for the ordeal.

However, colleagues and investigators disagree with this theory, as there was no evidence to suggest the employee had been struggling or facing personal issues.

Photo: By Quintin Soloviev – Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=75210603

Airline Expressed Condolences

In response to the tragic accident, American Airlines expressed its condolences. Further extended their thoughts and prayers to the family and local team members.

They assured full cooperation in the ongoing open investigation to determine the true cause of the incident.

Despite American Airlines’ condolences, concerns have been raised about Menzies Airlines’ reputation for being hired based on cost rather than quality.

The neglect of maintenance practices and the alleged history of mechanical problems underscore the importance of ensuring stringent safety measures in the aviation industry.

The investigation continues as authorities seek to establish accountability and prevent such accidents in the future.

As the aviation community mourns the loss of one of its own, the focus remains on seeking justice. Thereupon improving safety standards for all staff members working tirelessly in the airline industry.

Stay tuned with us.
