{"id":27784,"date":"2022-11-06T17:13:24","date_gmt":"2022-11-06T11:43:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/?p=27784"},"modified":"2022-11-06T17:13:27","modified_gmt":"2022-11-06T11:43:27","slug":"hundreds-of-climate-activists-block-private-jet-taking-off-at-schiphol-airport-in-amsterdam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/index.php\/2022\/11\/06\/hundreds-of-climate-activists-block-private-jet-taking-off-at-schiphol-airport-in-amsterdam\/","title":{"rendered":"Hundreds of climate activists block private jet taking off at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam | Exclusive"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Hundreds of climate activists breached a runway on Saturday at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amsterdam_Airport_Schiphol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amsterdam\u2019s Schiphol airport<\/a> to try to stop private jets from taking off, in the latest demonstration by protesters aimed at drawing attention to the climate crisis.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-amsterdam-airport-schiphol\">Amsterdam Airport Schiphol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Greenpeace Netherlands stated\u201cmore than 500\u201d Greenpeace and Extinction Rebellion activists were at the airport, 1 of Europe\u2019s biggest, on Saturday afternoon, a press release.\u00a0A spokesperson for the Schiphol security forces could not confirm that figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/TELEMMGLPICT000315163712_trans_NvBQzQNjv4Bqcvya6rOQnD6W9RNWBA6vPlW4ClFB_21owtVAWclwc60.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27785\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/TELEMMGLPICT000315163712_trans_NvBQzQNjv4Bqcvya6rOQnD6W9RNWBA6vPlW4ClFB_21owtVAWclwc60.webp 480w, https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/TELEMMGLPICT000315163712_trans_NvBQzQNjv4Bqcvya6rOQnD6W9RNWBA6vPlW4ClFB_21owtVAWclwc60-300x188.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Amsterdam Airport Schiphol | Aviationa2z.com<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>There were about \u201cmore than 300\u201d activists, the spokesperson of The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, the military force guarding the airport, said<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Robert Kapel acknowledged it was a \u201cbig scale\u201d demonstration. Still, he said air traffic was unaffected as the runway was exclusively used for private jets and no flights are scheduled until late Saturday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis morning activists gathered in the forest nearby,\u00a0carrying flags and banners with slogans such as \u2018SOS for the climate\u2019 and \u2018Fly no more.\u2019\u00a0At the same time another group reached the airport from the opposite direction with bicycles,\u201d Greenpeace told.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Greenpeace says Schiphol is the biggest source of carbon dioxide emissions in the Netherlands, emitting 12bn kilograms annually.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Images from Greenpeace show groups of dozens of demonstrators sitting down on the tarmac by multiple aircraft on the runway. activists,\u00a0some of whom were dragged to waiting buses after passively resisting arrest,\u00a0AFP reported.\u00a0More than a hundred arrests \u201cand counting\u201d have been made so far, Kapel told.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-greenpeace-schiphol-s-new-ceo\">Greenpeace, Schiphol\u2019s new CEO<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Responding to the protest, Schiphol stated it aimed to become an emissions-free airport by 2030 and it supported targets for the aviation industry to reach net zero emissions by 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, in a statement to an open letter from Greenpeace, Schiphol\u2019s new CEO, Ruud Sondag, conceded that change needed to happen faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\"
