{"id":22123,"date":"2022-07-03T11:58:38","date_gmt":"2022-07-03T06:28:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/?p=22123"},"modified":"2022-07-25T13:05:40","modified_gmt":"2022-07-25T07:35:40","slug":"programming-error-left-american-airlines-with-12000-flights-without-pilots-in-july","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/index.php\/2022\/07\/03\/programming-error-left-american-airlines-with-12000-flights-without-pilots-in-july\/","title":{"rendered":"Programming error left American Airlines with 12,000 flights without pilots in July"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\"><strong>The Dallas Fort Worth-based airline had 12,000 trips in July without any pilots rostered to actually fly them due to a programming issue in the mechanism used to assign flights to pilots.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bug appears to have happened on Friday when the trip exchange with open time system, the roster software, mistakenly permitted pilots to drop blocks of flights known as &#8220;<strong><em>sequences<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; that had previously been allotted to them back into the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"da\" dir=\"ltr\">AA -huge- OOOPS: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ooeDSfDcHc\">pic.twitter.com\/ooeDSfDcHc<\/a><\/p>&mdash; \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 JonNYC \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 (@xJonNYC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/xJonNYC\/status\/1543255785769246723?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 2, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A large number of pilots allegedly noticed the mistake and returned 2,000 sequences to the trading system. 37,000 flying hours or about 12,000 flights were included in the dropped sequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The union that represents AA&#8217;s pilots blamed &#8220;<strong><em>mismanagement<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; within the company as American Airlines rushed to fix the problem. The Allied Pilots Association said it planned to use the debacle as leverage in contract talks to obtain incentives for pilots to work during the holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong><em>&#8220;A technical issue occurred with our pilot trip trading system.
