A third beginning identified the plane as a Boeing 767 belonging to the state-owned Iraqi Airways, stating that it was not in service and was undergoing repairs.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The attack was not immediately claimed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Current months have seen rocket and drone attacks target the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">US <\/a>embassy in Baghdad\u2019s high-security Green Zone, a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">US <\/a>diplomatic establishment at the airport, and troops belonging to a US-led coalition stationed at Iraqi bases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The attacks are rarely declared but are routinely pinned on pro-Iran factions, who require that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">US <\/a>troops who were deployed to support Iraqi forces fight the Islamic State group leave the country. On January 3, US forces downed two armed drones that targeted the coalition at Baghdad airport, according to a coalition source. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-arbil-international-airport-in-northern-iraq\">Arbil international airport in northern Iraq <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On January 13, three people, including two children, were wounded by a rocket that hit a school in the Green Zone, while two other rockets fell inside the US embassy complex, without causing casualties. In September, an \u201carmed drone\u201d attack targeted Arbil international airport in northern Iraq\u2019s Kurdistan region, where a base hosts coalition troops. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more recent rocket and drone fire come amid a tense domestic political situation. An election in October saw Fatah (Conquest) Alliance, the political wing of pro-Iran ex-paramilitary coalition Hashed al-Shaabi, lose most of its seats.
