{"id":17045,"date":"2022-01-24T13:50:00","date_gmt":"2022-01-24T08:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/?p=17045"},"modified":"2022-01-24T13:38:10","modified_gmt":"2022-01-24T08:08:10","slug":"low-flying-pilot-hit-power-line-shone-landing-light-at-cars-then-asked-passengers-to-lie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/index.php\/2022\/01\/24\/low-flying-pilot-hit-power-line-shone-landing-light-at-cars-then-asked-passengers-to-lie\/","title":{"rendered":"Low-flying pilot \u2018hit power line, shone landing light at cars then asked passengers to lie\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">A pilot taking <strong>three passengers on a sightseeing flight<\/strong> over Pretoria flew so dangerously\u00a0 low over a road that he severed an <strong>overhead power line with his propeller.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pilot also shone his landing light at oncoming vehicles on the <strong>M35 Soutpan Road<\/strong> in the Soshanguve area on the afternoon of September 5 last year, his passengers told a <strong>Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) investigator.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"280\" src=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/unnamed.png\" alt=\"A pilot taking three passengers on a sightseeing flight over Pretoria flew so dangerously\u00a0 low over a road\" class=\"wp-image-17052\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/unnamed.png 500w, https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/unnamed-300x168.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>The <strong>four-seater Cessna 172 Skyhawk, <\/strong>which was rented from Eage Air Flight School,\u00a0 survived the collision with the power cable.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse has-text-align-center\">But according to the CAA \u201c<strong>limited serious incident investigation report\u201d,<\/strong> the pilot asked his passengers to lie about what happened and blame a student pilot who flew the plane the previous day for damage to the propeller.\n\n The report said the rented aircraft also exceeded its <strong>maximum take off weight by 5.5%.<\/strong><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>It said the plane \u201c<em>struck a power line while the pilot was flying the aircraft at a very low height over a road, endangering the safety of the aircraft, the occupants and property\u201d.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pilot said <strong>30 minutes after taking off from Wonderboom Aerodrome<\/strong>, he felt something in the aircraft and heard a noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"565\" src=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Cessna-172n-1024x565.jpg\" alt=\"A pilot taking three passengers on a sightseeing flight over Pretoria flew so dangerously\u00a0 low over a road\" class=\"wp-image-17057\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Cessna-172n-1024x565.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Cessna-172n-600x331.jpg 600w, https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Cessna-172n-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Cessna-172n-768x424.jpg 768w, https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Cessna-172n-1536x848.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Cessna-172n-750x414.jpg 750w, https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Cessna-172n-1140x629.jpg 1140w, https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Cessna-172n.jpg 1631w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse has-text-align-center\">He checked the performance of the aircraft as well as the <strong>flight controls <\/strong>before deciding to land for a thorough inspection.\n\n Upon seeing <strong>no damage <\/strong>he concluded he could have entered an air pocket and took off again with his three passengers.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the passengers, a private pilot, told the investigator they descended to <strong>between 50ft and 100ft above the ground,<\/strong> flew over an open field then followed a road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201c<em>While he was above the road, he flashed the landing light onto the oncoming traffic on the road.<\/em><\/p><p><em> It was during this period that the aircraft propeller severed what they (the passengers) believed to be a power line,\u201d<\/em> the report said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The private pilot said the aircraft shuddered, then there was a bang and a flash of bright white light. After this, the pilot in command tested the flight controls.
