Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat and 12 others including his staff, the pilots and crew <\/strong>was enroute to the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, from Sulur on December 8 when it crashed in the Nilgris in Tamil Nadu close to the destination. <\/li><li>A tri-service inquiry was ordered by the <strong>IAF headed by Air Marshal Manvendra Singh, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief Training Command<\/strong> to investigate the crash.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the inquiry, the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) as well as the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) were recovered and sent for analysis to reconstruct the last moments before the crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\"><strong>Unravelling a helicopter crash <\/strong>&#8211; Disorientation of Crew ?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">A tri-service enquiry has found that the IAF helicopter crashed in the Nilgiris on December 8, killing Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat and 12 others, was on a controlled flight into terrain (CFIT)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-aviation-experts-say\"><strong>What aviation experts say:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-black-color has-very-light-gray-to-cyan-bluish-gray-gradient-background has-text-color has-background wp-block-list\"><li>When a CFIT happens, a pilot is in full control of the aircraft but due to\u00a0<strong>faulty situational awareness<\/strong>, the aircraft strikes the terrain.<\/li><li>The helicopter usually is fully serviceable and\u00a0<strong>instruments are in order<\/strong>.<\/li><li>The crash is likely due to\u00a0<strong>disorientation in poor weather<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"345\" height=\"466\" src=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/14665.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/14665.jpg 345w, https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/14665-222x300.jpg 222w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 345px) 100vw, 345px\" \/><figcaption>Air Vice Marshal Manmohan Bahadur <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fire in the mountains:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-black-color has-very-light-gray-to-cyan-bluish-gray-gradient-background has-text-color has-background wp-block-list\"><li>The ill-fated&nbsp;<strong>Mi-17V5<\/strong>&nbsp;took off from Sulur Air Base at 11:48 am.<\/li><li>Air Traffic Control&nbsp;<strong>lost contact<\/strong>&nbsp;with it around 12:08 pm.<\/li><li>Local people spotted a fire&nbsp;<strong>near Coonoor<\/strong>&nbsp;and rushed to the spot, observed the wreckage of the helicopter in flames.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-black-color has-light-green-cyan-background-color has-text-color has-background\"><strong>CFIT<\/strong> means that the pilot is in <strong>full control of the aircraft <\/strong>but due to faulty situational awareness the aircraft strikes the terrain, explained <strong>Air Vice Marshal Manmohan Bahadur (Retd), <\/strong>a former helicopter pilot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u201cAn example could be of an aircraft doing low flying over a large expanse of water and striking it due to lack of depth perception. A similar strike could happen over snow,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> he said elaborating on what CFIT means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-black-color has-pale-cyan-blue-background-color has-text-color has-background\">A <strong>CFIT<\/strong> means the helicopter was fully serviceable and instruments are in order, a <strong>senior Army pilot<\/strong> who has flown extensively in the mountain said.
