King Charles III, Queen Camilla and the Prince and Princess of Wales have all travelled on commercial airlines, demonstrating that royal status does not automatically mean private aviation for every journey.

The choice of aircraft depends on the trip’s purpose, security requirements, and operational arrangements. These arrangements provide greater flexibility for complex schedules, security coordination and journeys involving several destinations.

One important aircraft used for government and royal travel is the Royal Air Force’s Voyager, which can transport senior officials and members of the royal family. Chartered private aircraft are also used when the requirements of an official visit make commercial services impractical.

The financial arrangements for these journeys are different from those covering private holidays.

According to the Royal Household’s 2025-26 Sovereign Grant report, approved official travel is funded through the Sovereign Grant, with overseas state visits and other official engagements subject to government approval and established procedures.

Prince William’s February 2026 visit to Saudi Arabia was the most expensive royal journey recorded for that financial year, costing approximately £130,000. The figures demonstrate how official royal travel involves substantial logistical and financial planning beyond the cost of an airline ticket.

By ERIC SALARD – https://www.flickr.com/photos/airlines470/49030476262/, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=97285064

Royals Fly Commercial

Despite the availability of dedicated aircraft, members of the royal family have regularly used scheduled passenger services. William and Kate travelled to India in April 2016 aboard British Airways before beginning their official visit, arriving in Mumbai without using a dedicated royal aircraft.

The couple also selected Aer Lingus for their first official visit to Ireland in March 2020. They subsequently arrived in Boston on a commercial flight during their 2022 visit to the United States.

Their use of commercial aviation has extended to personal journeys. In 2011, William and Kate reportedly used budget airlines Flybe and easyJet when travelling to Scotland for Zara Tindall’s wedding.

In 2019, the couple and their three children also surprised passengers when they travelled on Flybe from Norwich to Aberdeen to visit Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral. The journey demonstrated that royal family members could use ordinary airline services for relatively straightforward domestic travel.

More recently, William and George reportedly flew commercially to Barcelona on November 3, 2026, during the young prince’s school break. The father-son trip attracted attention because both are direct heirs to the British throne.

Photo: Wikimedia Commons

Special Royal Rules

Royal aviation has also involved unusual travel protocols designed to protect the monarchy’s succession. Traditionally, the monarch’s immediate successors are discouraged from travelling together on the same aircraft because a serious accident could affect multiple generations of the royal family.

Former royal pilot Graham Laurie previously explained that Prince William travelled separately from his parents after turning 12 in 1994. Exceptions were possible when Queen Elizabeth II provided written permission for family members to share an aircraft.

However, this arrangement has never been a legally binding prohibition, and modern travel decisions can be made according to individual circumstances.

Queen Elizabeth also had specific preferences when flying commercially.

Instructions discovered among the memorabilia of former British Airways flight attendant Elizabeth Evans, who served the monarch during a 1989 royal tour, revealed that the Queen preferred Velamints, carried her own pillows and enjoyed a martini before receiving guests, People reported.

Cabin crew were also instructed not to wake her if she was sleeping before landing.

These arrangements illustrate the contrast between royal aviation traditions and ordinary passenger travel. While security and official responsibilities often determine how senior royals fly, commercial airlines remain an option when circumstances allow.

Stay tuned with us.
