The schedule is due to begin in March 2027 and will determine how international services operate during the period.

The 12 airlines that did not receive allocations account for approximately 16 daily departures connecting Mumbai with 14 destinations. Their potential relocation forms part of a broader plan to distribute international operations between Mumbai’s existing airport and the new facility in Navi Mumbai.

Sources indicated that the arrangement would preserve approximately 91% of Mumbai airport’s existing traffic capacity. Its representatives also raised concerns about compliance with guidelines issued by India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The dispute highlights the challenges involved in transferring international operations between two airports serving the same metropolitan region. Foreign airlines have previously opposed the proposed relocation, citing concerns about the transition process and its impact on their existing operations.

MIAL operates Mumbai Airport, while both Mumbai and Navi Mumbai airports are part of the Adani Airport Holdings network. The allocation decision therefore affects how the group plans to manage capacity across its two facilities.

Photo: Navi Mumbai International Airport

Navi Mumbai Shift Delayed

The latest development follows an earlier postponement of the planned transfer of some international services. MIAL initially intended to begin shifting international operations from October 25, 2026, but subsequently deferred implementation until March 2027 after foreign carriers raised concerns.

The proposed changes are linked to planned renovation work at Mumbai airport’s Terminal 1, which is expected to begin in early 2027, The Hindu Business Line reported. Moving selected international services to NMIA is intended to help manage airport capacity during the infrastructure changes.

Meanwhile, Air India, Air India Express, IndiGo and Akasa Air have jointly announced plans with AAHL to transfer their international operations to Navi Mumbai in phases over the coming months.

The Summer 2027 slot allocation represents an important step in determining how international airlines will operate across the two airports.

However, questions surrounding the allocation process and the concerns raised by foreign carriers could influence the transition as the March 2027 deadline approaches.

Stay tuned with us.
