The 23 remaining round trips equal 46 one-way flights, so the route is shortened, not cancelled.

The route covers about 8,076 miles and takes around 15 hours. The Boeing 787-9 seats 257 passengers: 48 in United Polaris business class, 21 in United Premium Plus, and the remaining 188 in economy cabins.

Before this service, travelers between Adelaide and the US had to connect through Brisbane, Melbourne, or Sydney.

US Department of Transportation data shows United carried 11,778 round-trip passengers on the route in its first season. The average seat load factor was 52.7%, which means just over half of the seats were filled.

The figure peaked at 68.5% when holiday travel supported demand at the start of the service. It fell to 33.7% in February 2026.

Load factor shows only part of a route’s performance. It does not account for ticket prices, cargo revenue, or operating costs. Passenger numbers may also not be the only reason for the cut.

A United spokesperson told Aero South Pacific that the airline regularly changes its schedule due to “aircraft availability, market dynamics and other factors.”

Photo: JFK Spotting

Why South Australia Expected Larger Boost

South Australia already had a sizeable US visitor market. Nonstop service between city pairs with no direct history carries financial risk for airlines.

On ultra-long-haul routes, the risk is higher, because airlines must commit expensive widebody aircraft to flights that take up a large part of their operating day.

Some reports say the South Australian Government gave the route financial support, but the details of any arrangement are not public.

Such support can help establish a new service, but it does not guarantee that demand will match projections.

Photo: Dylan T | Flickr

United’s Australia Network For Winter 2026/27

United serves four Australian cities: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Adelaide. Carriers generally routed flights across the South Pacific, and some also used the North Pacific.

The 2 countries introduced an Open Skies agreement in 2008, which removed many limits on capacity and frequency and gave airlines more freedom to expand.

Cirium scheduled data shows airlines have planned around 11,295 flights between the two countries in 2026, offering approximately 3.3 million seats. These are scheduled capacity figures, not passengers flown.

Five airlines operate nonstop services: United, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Alaska Airlines, and Qantas. United alone has scheduled around 3,700 flights this year, offering approximately 960,507 seats.

For the upcoming winter season, the five airlines have scheduled more than 5,200 flights and over 1.4 million seats.

Qantas and United account for most of this capacity. It began operations in February 1986 after acquiring Pan Am’s Pacific division, a deal that gave it Pacific routes, aircraft, and other assets.

Its first service flew from Los Angeles to Sydney on February 12, 1986, and Melbourne flights started at the same time. United initially used Boeing 747s, and some services stopped in Honolulu or Auckland.

The Los Angeles to Sydney flight was then the only nonstop service between the US mainland and Australia or New Zealand. During the 1990s, United added Brisbane and San Francisco to Sydney flights.

United also served Cairns via Guam. Continental Micronesia first operated that route as part of Continental’s Pacific network, and United inherited it after the 2010 merger with Continental Airlines.

United ended the Guam to Cairns service on September 26, 2015, citing financial performance and shifting asset allocations.

United has also withdrawn Australian routes that underperformed. It launched Los Angeles to Brisbane on November 29, 2023, with 3 weekly flights on a 257-seat Boeing 787-9.

The route ended on February 14, 2024, less than three months later. United kept serving Brisbane from San Francisco.

Stay tuned with us.
