Its extensive network established customer base and premium onboard products have helped it maintain a strong position in the international aviation market.

Riyadh Air is entering this competitive environment with substantial financial support from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. The airline opened ticket sales across multiple international destinations in 2026, including London, Manchester, Cairo, Dubai and Madrid, as it gradually builds its Boeing 787-9 fleet.

The new carrier’s expansion creates another competitor for passengers travelling through the Middle East. However, Emirates has advantages that a new airline cannot immediately reproduce, including an established global network, operational experience and decades of brand recognition.

Emirates also has considerable financial resources to strengthen its position. For the financial year ending March 31, 2026, the airline reported a record profit before tax of AED22.8 billion (US$6.2 billion), providing substantial capacity for further investment in its passenger experience.

Photo: Emirates

Emirates’ $5 Billion Fleet Upgrade

The centrepiece of Emirates’ strategy is its extensive aircraft refurbishment programme. The airline plans to modernise 219 aircraft, comprising 110 Airbus A380s and 109 Boeing 777s, with refreshed interiors, upgraded seating and its four-class cabin configuration.

The programme includes the expansion of Premium Economy, which gives passengers an additional option between standard Economy and Business Class. The cabin allows Emirates to attract travellers seeking additional comfort without paying for a full Business Class ticket.

By July 2026, Emirates had completed refurbishments on 100 aircraft, including 47 A380s and 53 Boeing 777s. The airline expected to complete more than half of its planned upgrades by December 2026.

The refurbishment programme is also introducing further improvements to the passenger experience. From October 2026, Emirates plans to incorporate 4K OLED HDR10+ seatback screens and lightweight Safran Z400 seats as part of the next phase of cabin enhancements.

Emirates 777 Retrofitted First Class Seat | Photo: Emirates

Emirates Premium Passenger Experience

Emirates is also investing in services beyond aircraft seating to strengthen its premium positioning. Its latest Spring/Summer Bulgari amenity kit collection, introduced in June 2026, represents the 18th edition of its partnership with the Italian luxury brand.

The First Class collection includes Bulgari fragrances, including Le Gemme Sahare Eau de Parfum for female passengers. The airline has also introduced updated designs and travel essentials across selected First and Business Class services.

Connectivity is another major part of the investment. Emirates plans to install Starlink Wi-Fi across 232 Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft, offering passengers high-speed internet access during flights, Simple Flying flagged.

Meanwhile, Riyadh Air is entering the market with newly manufactured Boeing 787-9 aircraft and modern cabin products. Its clean-sheet fleet allows it to introduce contemporary passenger technology from the beginning.

For Emirates, the challenge is to maintain its established advantages while responding to a competitor with significant financial backing and ambitious expansion plans. The airline’s investment in aircraft interiors, connectivity, and premium services demonstrates how established carriers are strengthening their products as competition across the Gulf intensifies.

Stay tuned with us.
