American Airlines’ electronic boarding gates represent this shift, but their ability to improve the overall boarding experience remains an important question.

American Airlines announced its electronic boarding gate rollout on April 14, 2026, as part of its airport modernization plans.

The equipment uses glass barriers that open after passengers scan their boarding passes and the system validates their travel details.

The gates are manufactured by Dormakaba and use the Argus Air XS technology. American’s September 2026 opening of the new Terminal C pier at DFW introduced nine gates equipped with the electronic system.

According to American Airlines’ announcement, the equipment is designed to:

Automatically validate boarding passes before opening the barriers.

Control the pace at which passengers enter the jet bridge.

Reduce repetitive manual tasks for gate employees.

Give employees more time to assist passengers and manage operational requirements.

American expects the technology to create a more consistent boarding process. However, automated verification only addresses passenger access to the jet bridge. It does not resolve the problems passengers encounter when boarding the aircraft itself.

Photo: United Airlines

Why United CEO Scott Kirby Wants Similar Gates

United CEO Scott Kirby’s interest in American’s equipment reflects his efforts to study competing airlines and identify improvements for United.

He lives in Dallas and is regularly spotted flying American Airlines. Southwest Airlines also has a major presence in the area through Dallas Love Field (DAL).

View from the Wing reported that Kirby emailed his United team after experiencing American’s new gates and asking why United did not have similar equipment. Passengers may even take longer when they must scan their documents and wait for an automated barrier to open, particularly when employees are unavailable to provide assistance.

Several other factors contribute more directly to boarding delays.

Carry-on luggage and limited overhead space: Passengers carrying large bags need additional time to find available overhead storage. When the compartments become full, employees must help passengers find alternatives or arrange gate-checking.

Gate-checked bags: Checking luggage at the boarding gate introduces additional handling and coordination. This can interrupt passenger movement and delay the boarding sequence.

Family preboarding: Families traveling with young children often require additional time to organize luggage, manage boarding documents, and settle into their seats. The process also requires support from airline employees.

Standby passenger processing: Standby passengers and last-minute boarding changes can require manual verification and additional coordination, which automated gates cannot independently resolve.

These problems occur beyond the boarding pass scanning stage. Electronic barriers can manage queues and control access, but they cannot increase overhead bin capacity or make passengers organize their belongings faster.

Photo: United Airlines

Kirby’s Approach to Family Travel

Kirby’s personal approach to customer experience is particularly relevant when evaluating new boarding technology.

As a father of seven, he understands the challenges families face when traveling with young children.

He has said, “I have seven kids. I know what it’s like,” while explaining why he considers family travel when evaluating the passenger experience.

His broader argument is that making air travel easier for families can improve the experience for everyone.

Automated gates should therefore simplify the boarding process rather than introduce additional steps for passengers who already need more time and assistance. Families should be able to move through the boarding area without unnecessary complications.

Photo: Clément Alloing

Facial Recognition Creates Separate Privacy Concerns

The introduction of electronic boarding gates also raises questions about facial recognition and passenger data privacy.

American’s DFW announcement focuses on boarding pass validation and passenger flow management. It does not establish that facial recognition is currently being used at the nine new gates.

However, dormakaba offers optional biometric features, including facial recognition, for its Argus Air XS equipment. This makes it important to distinguish automated boarding pass checks from biometric identity verification.

The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency already uses facial comparison technology for certain international travel procedures through its Traveler Verification Service.

During this process, a camera captures a live photograph of the passenger. CBP or an authorized travel partner, such as an airline or airport authority, securely submits the image to the agency.

CBP compares the photograph with images from previous encounters, passports, visas and other travel documents to verify the passenger’s identity and confirm that the person is the legitimate holder of those documents.

CBP also has specific privacy safeguards:

US citizens are not required to provide facial photographs for biometric exit verification and can request an alternative document verification process.

Photographs of US citizens collected through the relevant process are discarded within 12 hours of identity verification.

Photographs of certain foreign nationals are retained in secure Department of Homeland Security systems under applicable rules.

CBP monitors the performance of its facial comparison system and works with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) on independent assessments.

These safeguards apply to CBP’s biometric verification program. They should not automatically be assumed to govern separate biometric systems operated by airlines or equipment manufacturers.

Before introducing facial recognition at boarding gates, airlines should clearly explain where passenger photographs come from, how accurate the system is, who can access the information and how long the images are retained.

Passengers should also understand what alternatives are available when biometric verification fails or they choose not to participate.

Photo: United Airlines

What United Should Consider Before Adopting Technology

United’s interest in American’s electronic gates shows that its leadership is examining new ways to improve airport operations.

However, the technology should be evaluated through measurable operational results rather than its level of automation.

The most important measurement is total boarding time.
