The amount is equivalent to approximately $10.12 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the court&#8217;s findings, Liu accepted illegal payments and valuables between 2002 and 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this period, he held several senior positions across China&#8217;s aviation industry, including general manager of China Eastern Airlines, general manager of China Southern Air Holding Group, and chairman of <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/index.php\/tag\/china-southern-airline\/\">China Southern Airlines<\/a>, as well as general manager and chairman of China Eastern Air Holding Group and chairman of China Eastern Airlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The court found that Liu abused the authority and influence associated with these positions to provide benefits to companies and individuals. His assistance involved 3 main areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Business operations:<\/strong> Helping companies and individuals obtain advantages in commercial activities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Project contracts:<\/strong> Using his official influence to help parties secure business and project contracts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Flight route management:<\/strong> Providing assistance in matters involving airline routes and related management decisions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The investigation covered his conduct across these different leadership positions. Therefore, the 2002\u20132023 period does not represent 21 years spent exclusively as chairman of China Eastern Airlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The court imposed an additional fine of 4 million yuan. It also ordered the confiscation of his illegal gains and related proceeds, which were to be transferred to the state treasury. Liu first came under investigation on June 28, 2025, when China&#8217;s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) and National Commission of Supervision announced an investigation into suspected serious violations of party discipline and state laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On January 4, 2026, authorities announced Liu&#8217;s expulsion from the Communist Party of China (CPC). The disciplinary investigation found that he had abused his authority for personal gain and used his official positions to obtain benefits for others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The disciplinary findings also referred to his involvement in project contracting, flight management, and aircraft leasing. Authorities accused him of accepting illegal payments and engaging in serious violations of political, organizational, and financial discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On May 8, 2026, China&#8217;s Supreme People&#8217;s Procuratorate announced that Liu had been formally charged with bribery. The National Commission of Supervision had completed its investigation and transferred the case to prosecutors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Supreme People&#8217;s Procuratorate also approved his arrest, while the Shenyang People&#8217;s Procuratorate brought the case before the Shenyang Intermediate People&#8217;s Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The court held the trial on July 24, 2026. Prosecutors presented evidence, and Liu and his defence team responded during the proceedings.
