He said the airline continues to perform strongly despite geopolitical tensions, higher fuel costs and aircraft supply challenges.

In an interview with Aviation Week’s Window Seat podcast, Clark discussed Emirates’ operational resilience, the future of its Dubai (DXB) hub, engine maintenance bottlenecks and the airline’s demand for larger aircraft. Emirates has been waiting for the aircraft to support its long-term fleet expansion, but certification delays, engine availability and production constraints continue to complicate the programme.

The Emirates president said the airline had informed Boeing several years ago, both verbally and in writing, that it would not accept the early-production 777-9 aircraft.

According to Clark, those aircraft were built in 2018 and 2019 and had remained standing for several years. He questioned the condition and suitability of taking aircraft that had spent such a long period waiting for delivery.

He also criticised the manufacturers for failing to provide clear information about future deliveries. Although the first three or four aircraft had some delivery visibility, Emirates still lacked a reliable picture of the wider delivery schedule.

Clark said Boeing had not provided a clear production ramp-up plan. The manufacturer had not confirmed how quickly it could increase output from one aircraft per month to higher production rates.

The delivery situation is particularly concerning because the Boeing 777X programme has accumulated nearly 700 sales. A significant portion of these aircraft was originally scheduled for delivery between 2020 and 2029.

However, as the end of 2026 approached, not a single aircraft had been delivered. Clark described the resulting compression of the contracted delivery schedule as unacceptable.

He also criticised GE, the programme’s sole engine supplier, for its inability to provide engines in line with the aircraft production requirements.

The engine shortage affects Boeing’s manufacturing sequence. The manufacturer must complete aircraft interiors and other installations but cannot release finished aircraft without the engines. This forces Boeing to move aircraft through production out of sequence and wait for engine availability.

Clark acknowledged that the situation creates significant difficulties for Boeing but argued that the manufacturer and engine supplier should have coordinated their production plans much earlier.

He recalled raising the issue during the Farnborough Airshow, where he held separate meetings with Boeing and GE to demand a clearer explanation.

The airline president said Emirates was still waiting for a dependable delivery programme despite repeatedly asking for firm dates. He also expressed concern that any eventual schedule could contain significant restrictions and conditions.

For now, Emirates must continue meeting passenger demand with its existing aircraft while waiting for the new-generation widebodies, Aviation Week reported.

Photo: JFK Spotting

Emirates Maintains Operations Despite Middle East Geopolitical Unrest

Despite geopolitical tensions across the Middle East, Clark said Emirates’ operational performance remained stronger than many people might have expected.

The airline was operating approximately 91% of its fleet and production at the time of the interview. Around seven points across its global network were not operational, including destinations in Iran and Iraq.

Clark said both passenger and cargo revenue streams remained strong and were performing better than during the corresponding period of the previous year.

Although the early stages of the regional unrest affected travel demand, the situation gradually improved. Clark explained that passenger traffic began recovering around June and July after an initial period of weaker demand.

Cargo operations also performed particularly well. Disruptions at maritime chokepoints had affected traditional shipping routes, increasing demand for air cargo services.

Emirates benefited from this shift because businesses continued to require reliable transportation for time-sensitive shipments.

The airline transported significant volumes of just-in-time cargo, pharmaceuticals, and automotive-related production materials. These shipments require dependable transportation schedules to prevent interruptions to manufacturing and distribution operations.

Clark described cargo as a particularly positive part of the airline’s performance during the period.

Photo: Clément Alloing

Higher Fuel Costs Affect Emirates Profitability

Rising fuel prices remain an important financial challenge for Emirates, although Clark said the airline had protected a substantial portion of its fuel requirements through hedging arrangements.

He explained that Emirates had secured a significant share of its fuel at prices considerably below current market levels.

However, the remaining unhedged portion had become more expensive. Clark referred to fuel prices reaching $111 and acknowledged that the increase had reduced the airline’s profitability compared with the previous year.

Despite the higher costs, Emirates remained profitable and cash-positive.

Clark said the airline would have delivered an even stronger financial performance during the first half of the year if fuel prices had remained at earlier levels.

He also highlighted the strength of forward sales and the airline’s cash position, saying the percentage of forward sales relative to total income on its balance sheet remained unchanged.

Clark recalled the fuel price shock of May 2009, when prices reached $140 before falling to $30 within a month. He used that experience to explain why airlines must prepare for changing fuel markets rather than assume elevated prices will continue indefinitely.

He added that higher fuel expenses affect different airline business models in different ways. Long-haul airlines such as Emirates face particular exposure because ultra-long-haul operations require aircraft to carry substantial fuel loads.

Nevertheless, Clark maintained that Emirates could continue operating profitably and generate positive cash flow under the prevailing conditions.

Photo: Emirates

Tim Clark Defends Dubai Hub Strategy and Rejects Relocation Concerns

Clark rejected the suggestion that Emirates’ reliance on a single central hub in Dubai represented an operational weakness.

He argued that major airline groups with multiple hubs also face significant disruption when one of their main operating centres becomes unavailable.

He referred to the European airline model, particularly groups operating through several hubs and airlines, questioning whether another hub could realistically absorb the entire operation if one major centre faced a serious disruption.

Clark said Emirates had developed its operating model around Dubai over 41 years and had learned to manage the challenges associated with that structure.

He also defended Dubai’s infrastructure investment, arguing that the city’s resilience extends beyond its international reputation as a business and tourism destination.

According to Clark, the government had invested tens of billions of dollars in transport, electricity, water, sewage, roads, schools and other essential infrastructure.

He said these investments strengthened Dubai’s ability to withstand external challenges and maintain its position as a global aviation and business centre.

Clark dismissed suggestions that Emirates might need to relocate its main operations because of regional tensions.

However, he stressed that the airline’s determination to continue operating did not mean it would compromise safety.

As Emirates’ accountable manager for safety, he said operational decisions must remain within strict safety requirements. He made clear that the airline would not take unnecessary risks to maintain its network.

Photo: Cado Photo

Emirates Plans to Retire Airbus A380 Aircraft by 2041

Clark confirmed that Emirates currently expects to operate its Airbus A380 fleet until approximately 2041.

The retirement timeline reflects the aircraft’s extended service life. The A380 was originally designed for approximately 100,000 flight hours or 20 years of operation, alongside a specified number of flight cycles.

However, Emirates has extended the aircraft’s expected service life to approximately 24 years and believes some aircraft could reach 25 years.

Clark said the airline would eventually have to retire individual aircraft once they exceeded their certified operating lifespan, unless further changes allowed them to remain in service.

The A380 remains particularly important to Emirates because of its passenger appeal and financial performance.

Clark revealed that the aircraft was the most profitable asset in the airline’s fleet during the previous year. That performance came during what he described as the most profitable year Emirates had ever recorded.

The airline has also invested significantly in upgrading the A380 cabin. Its four-class configuration includes improvements across First Class, Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy Class.

Clark said passengers particularly appreciated the aircraft’s spacious interior, high ceilings, large cabin volume and redesigned passenger areas.

However, Emirates faces an immediate challenge in returning some of its A380 aircraft to service.

Photo: Emirates

Seven Emirates A380s Remain Grounded Amid Engine Overhaul Delays

Clark revealed that seven Emirates A380s were grounded because their engines required overhauls.

Although the engines had not necessarily suffered operational failures, they had reached the limits of their permitted operating cycles and could not continue flying without the required maintenance.

The airline is waiting for GE and Pratt & Whitney to address the engine overhaul bottlenecks.

Clark said the situation had become particularly frustrating because the contracted engine overhaul turnaround time was approximately 85 days. However, actual turnaround times had exceeded 350 days.

This represents more than four times the contracted maintenance period.

He explained that an engine overhaul involves extensive work rather than routine maintenance. The process requires replacing major components and restoring the engine to the required operating condition.

The prolonged turnaround times have left Emirates unable to return several aircraft to commercial service.

Clark also criticised the engine manufacturers for failing to secure sufficient materials to complete the required maintenance work within contracted timelines.

He did not provide a confirmed date for when the seven grounded A380s would return to service.

Photo: GoodFon

Boeing 777-9 Cannot Fully Replace the Airbus A380

Clark said the Boeing 777-9 would become Emirates’ largest next-generation aircraft, but he does not believe it can fully reproduce the A380’s passenger experience.

Emirates’ A380 fleet offers substantially more interior space, particularly in the Economy Class cabin.

Clark explained that the aircraft’s wide fuselage, higher ceilings, large window reveals and spacious entrance areas create a distinctive passenger environment.

The airline has also developed dedicated passenger areas and upgraded its premium cabins.

Its latest A380 configuration includes 56 Premium Economy seats on the main deck, alongside improvements to Business Class and First Class.

Clark said the airline had introduced enhanced seating, electrical privacy dividers, upgraded catering and additional cabin service improvements to strengthen the Premium Economy experience.

He also highlighted the aircraft’s premium facilities, including the upper-deck lounge.

Although the 777-9 will offer several improvements over existing aircraft, Clark acknowledged that its cabin dimensions cannot match the A380.

Emirates has nevertheless worked extensively on the 777-9 cabin design to maximise available space. The airline has focused on raising cabin sidewalls, improving the window experience and introducing features that enhance passenger comfort.

The Airbus A350-900 is another important component of Emirates’ future fleet. Clark said its three-class configuration had already proved popular with passengers.

He also discussed the possibility of acquiring the larger A350-1000, explaining that he had worked with Airbus on potential cabin designs, including the possibility of introducing First Class.

Clark also referred to a possible A350-2000 stretch, although he indicated that Airbus had not made a final decision about such an aircraft.

For Boeing, he suggested developing a stretched 777-10 based on the 777-9. Emirates had already communicated its preferred structural changes and aircraft requirements to the manufacturer.

These proposals reflect Emirates’ continued preference for larger aircraft capable of transporting substantial passenger volumes through Dubai.

Tim Clark Wants Airbus to Reconsider a Modernised A380

One of Clark’s most significant comments concerned the possibility of bringing the Airbus A380 back into production with substantial technological improvements.

He argued that aircraft manufacturers should look beyond existing widebody designs and develop larger aircraft that can support the next 50 years of commercial aviation.

Clark criticised the industry’s limited progress in developing new ultra-large passenger aircraft, pointing out that several established aircraft families remain in service decades after their introduction.

He believes the A380 still has significant commercial potential if Airbus develops a modernised version with more efficient technology.

His proposed improvements include newer engine technology, a redesigned wing, aerodynamic changes to the tail section, greater use of advanced materials and updated aircraft systems.

Clark also suggested incorporating technologies developed for newer aircraft, including the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787, into a redesigned A380.

He estimated that these changes could reduce the aircraft’s operating costs by approximately 25%.

According to his calculations, a modernised A380 could achieve fuel efficiency levels much closer to those of some existing twin-engine widebody aircraft.

However, these figures represent Clark’s assessment of a potential development programme rather than an officially announced Airbus performance target.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" A380s

Clark made clear that Emirates would be interested in purchasing a modernised A380 if Airbus decided to restart the programme.

He said the airline would replace its existing A380 aircraft and purchase an additional 100 examples of the updated aircraft.

However, developing and restarting production would require substantial financial commitments.

Clark explained that Airbus had previously indicated that an order for 100 aircraft would not be sufficient to cover the programme’s break-even requirements.

The manufacturer had suggested that approximately 250 aircraft would be necessary to make the production restart financially viable.

This creates a significant challenge because other major airlines have not demonstrated the same interest in operating ultra-large passenger aircraft.

Clark argued that the A380 requires substantial fleet scale to become economically viable.

He said Emirates originally ordered 125 aircraft because its Dubai hub could support the necessary passenger volumes and operating efficiencies.

In his assessment, airlines would need approximately 50 to 70 A380s to benefit from the economies of scale required to integrate the aircraft successfully into their networks.

Airlines operating only a limited number of A380s across different routes and markets would struggle to achieve the same financial benefits.

The Emirates president also said the airline had previously discussed the possibility of supporting an A380 production restart with Airbus.

He recalled that Airbus had suggested Emirates could finance the manufacturing facilities and production costs. However, Clark argued that the manufacturer should assume responsibility for restarting production and obtaining the necessary recertification.

Although no new A380 programme has been announced, Clark’s comments demonstrate that Emirates remains interested in larger passenger aircraft.

Emirates Airbus A380 | Photo: Clément Alloing

A Modernised A380 Could Open New Long-Haul Markets

Clark also explained how an updated A380 could support Emirates’ future international expansion.

He believes global air travel demand will continue growing, particularly in regions where aviation infrastructure and international connectivity remain limited.

He specifically highlighted opportunities across Africa and South America.

In Africa, Clark referred to major population centres such as Lagos and Accra, arguing that several large cities remain underserved by air transportation networks.

He also discussed the economic potential of South American markets, including Santiago, São Paulo, Buenos Aires and Panama.

Emirates already operates A380 services to São Paulo, Los Angeles and Houston, but Clark believes a more efficient ultra-large aircraft could extend the airline’s reach to additional destinations.

He suggested that a modernised A380 with improved performance could potentially operate non-stop services from Dubai to Santiago.

Such an aircraft could allow Emirates to serve more long-haul markets while transporting large passenger volumes through its central hub.

Clark believes the underlying demand for international travel remains stronger than many airlines previously anticipated.

He referred to the post-pandemic recovery, when passengers travelled more frequently and paid significantly higher fares than before the pandemic.

He said the recovery demonstrated that airlines had previously underestimated the value passengers placed on international travel.

This experience strengthened his belief that the industry should consider developing larger aircraft rather than limiting its future growth to existing twin-engine designs.

Photo: Clément Alloing

Emirates Questions Proposed EU Emissions Trading System Expansion

Clark also addressed a proposed European Union (EU) emissions trading system change that could bring Emirates’
