It was operating as a private aircraft rather than a scheduled commercial airline service.

The FAA confirmed that nine people were aboard the aircraft. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy subsequently confirmed that all nine occupants died in the crash.

Duffy described the incident as a horrific tragedy. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also visited the crash site and described the aircraft’s final descent as looking like a missile falling from the sky.

The jet struck the ground near Military Trail, creating a large crater and scattering debris across the surrounding area. Video footage from the scene showed emergency personnel responding to the burning wreckage.

Officials had not confirmed any ground casualties during the initial briefings. However, the crash caused significant disruption in the surrounding residential community.

WATCH: New video shows Learjet 60 business jet crashing near West Palm Beach, Florida.

The plane was completely disintegrated upon impact. However, the turbulence reportedly caused the aircraft’s altitude to fluctuate by as much as 700 feet.

The situation deteriorated after precipitation began. The pilot requested to climb before declaring an emergency to the Miami Air Route Traffic Control Center.

During the final radio transmissions, the pilot reported that the aircraft was descending rapidly. The pilot first reported a descent of 8,000 feet per minute and subsequently declared a mayday while describing a descent rate of 10,000 feet per minute.

A later transmission indicated an overspeed condition, with the pilot reporting a descent rate of 20,000 feet per minute and warning that the aircraft was about to hit the ground.

The recordings provide details of the final minutes of the flight, although investigators have not established what caused the emergency.

Flight Tracking Data Show Rapid 27,000-Foot Descent

Flight tracking information from ADS-B Exchange indicated that the Learjet experienced an extremely rapid loss of altitude shortly before the crash.

The available data showed that the aircraft descended approximately 27,000 feet in around one minute. Flight tracking information stopped shortly before the aircraft impacted the ground.

The reported descent is consistent with the emergency transmissions captured by air traffic control recordings. However, investigators will need to examine the aircraft’s flight data, maintenance history and other available evidence to establish the sequence of events.

The aircraft crashed near Military Trail, approximately four miles south of Palm Beach International Airport (PBI).

Photo: formulaone | Wikimedia Commons
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Palm_Beach_International_Airport_-_Concourse_C_Aerial.jpg

Approximately 600 Residents Face Displacement

The crash also affected a nearby residential community, prompting Palm Beach County officials to arrange temporary relocation assistance.

Approximately 600 residents of a nearby mobile home community were expected to be relocated while authorities secured the crash site for the investigation. Two shelters were placed on standby, and Palm Tran was prepared to assist with transporting residents.

Palm Beach County Commissioner Joel Flores said the crash created a significant debris field and damaged the surrounding area.

Authorities also closed Military Trail in both directions near Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North. The aircraft also passed through a stronger storm cell a few minutes before its rapid descent began.

However, authorities have not established whether weather conditions contributed to the accident. The reports of icing and turbulence, combined with the aircraft’s rapid descent, will require detailed examination as part of the investigation.

The crash was also reported as the second-deadliest aviation accident in the United States in 2026, following a June skydiving aircraft crash in Butler, Missouri, that killed 12 people.

The investigation will determine the circumstances behind the Learjet 60 accident and whether mechanical, environmental or other factors contributed to the loss of the aircraft.

Stay tuned with us.
