Scan the Machine Readable Zone (MRZ)

Passengers must scan the Machine Readable Zone printed on their e-passport using the Digi Yatra mobile application. The MRZ contains passport information used during the verification process.

2. Read the Embedded Passport Chip

The application uses the Near Field Communication (NFC) feature of a compatible smartphone to read the electronic chip embedded in the e-passport. This allows the system to access the relevant digital passport information.

3. Capture a Selfie

Passengers must take a selfie through the application to complete the biometric verification process.

4. Verify the Details and Create the Credential

After capturing the required information, the application verifies the details and creates the passenger’s Verifiable Credential.

Once successfully created, the credential is stored in the passenger’s Digi Yatra wallet on the smartphone. Passengers can use it at airport touchpoints equipped to support the international trials.

Photo: Indigo-X

How IndiGo Passengers Can Use Digi Yatra

IndiGo has outlined a process for eligible international passengers to use Digi Yatra during airport processing.

Passengers can upload their boarding passes to the Digi Yatra mobile application after completing mandatory document verification at the airline’s check-in counter.

Once the airline has completed the required checks, passengers can proceed through participating Security Hold Areas and boarding gates using Digi Yatra’s biometric face authentication facility.

IndiGo’s involvement in the international trials follows its participation in earlier technical proof-of-concept work. He described the international trials as an important step towards extending the same experience to eligible Indian nationals travelling abroad.

Khadakbhavi also highlighted the importance of interoperability with two international frameworks:

IATA One ID: Developed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), One ID focuses on improving passenger processing through digital identity and biometric-enabled travel procedures. It supports a more coordinated approach to passenger identification across the aviation industry.

ICAO Public Key Directory (PKD): The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) maintains the Public Key Directory to support the verification of electronic travel documents, including e-passports.
