The affected destinations were Paris, Nice, Lyon and Nantes in France, along with Milan in Italy, where the airline arranged alternative accommodation to reduce the risk of demonstrations interfering with crew members’ layovers.

The relocations came as protests spread across several European countries over issues including living costs and housing affordability. Air Canada did not confirm the specific accommodation changes, but said it continuously monitors global events and may temporarily move crew hotels closer to airports when security assessments indicate a need to protect employees and maintain flight operations.

Representative Photo: Air Canada

Air Canada Monitors Crew Safety

The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), which represents Air Canada pilots, said its Air Canada Master Executive Council works with airline security teams and government contacts to monitor threats and coordinate crew safety during critical events.

The association described accommodation changes as a common industry practice whenever a potential security threat or disruption could affect pilots’ rest.

Air Canada spokesperson Sean Davidson did not confirm the specific relocations. However, he said the airline monitors international developments, follows government guidance and conducts security assessments with industry partners before deciding whether to move crew accommodation closer to an airport.

The airline said such changes may be necessary to protect employees and support the on-time operation of flights returning to Canada. Air Canada crews on layovers are also instructed to follow Canadian government travel advisories.

Crew rest is an important part of airline operations because pilots and cabin crew need adequate rest before operating their next flight.

Relocating accommodation can help reduce exposure to demonstrations, transport interruptions or other security concerns that could prevent crew members from reporting for duty as scheduled.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" demonstrations in France and Italy on October 24 and 25, as protesters took to the streets over living costs, public services and other economic concerns.

France’s Interior Ministry estimated that 410,000 people participated in nationwide demonstrations on October 24, while authorities deployed approximately 70,000 police officers and gendarmes to manage the rallies.

Although many demonstrations remained peaceful, authorities were responding to violence and looting during earlier protests.

In Italy, security forces increased their presence in major cities, including Milan, where 500 soldiers were deployed following attacks on shops during the previous weekend’s unrest, <a

The unrest created an additional challenge for international airlines operating in affected cities, particularly when crew members needed secure accommodation and reliable transport
