Reed’s report in Forbes identifies the trip as Flight 733 and puts her career at 63½ years.

Fair began in 1963 at Piedmont Airlines, then worked at US Airways and later at American as the airlines merged.

On June 15, 1987, Fair worked Piedmont’s first Charlotte to London flight. Her final trip reverses that route, bringing her back to Charlotte for the last time as a working crew member.

American is expected to give her a water salute when she lands. This honor is typically reserved for pilots on their last flight, not flight attendants.

Fair said the time had come, that she enjoyed every minute of the job, and that she reached No. 1 out of 30,000. In her words, “You can’t go any higher, so I might as well hang it up.”

American’s seniority list includes around 30,000 flight attendants, and Fair holds the top spot among those who still fly. She is technically the third most senior flight attendant at the airline. The two ahead of her no longer fly but have not officially retired.

American once rejected Fair, saying she was not American material. Mergers later brought her to the airline she had wanted to join in the first place.

Fair primarily works international flights. These trips are the easiest way to build flight hours while limiting the number of days worked. She also prefers international passengers to those on domestic flights and said they are better vented.

Flight attendants of all ages are common in the United States. The country has no maximum age for the job, provided crew members pass recurrent training each year.

The system also rewards those who stay. Senior flight attendants reach the top of the pay scale and get their choice of routes through seniority-based bidding.

Fair is not the most senior American flight attendant of all time. That title belongs to Bette Nash, who was also the longest-serving flight attendant in the industry.

Nash started in 1957 at Eastern Airlines and later joined American. She worked for 67 years, until 2024. Guinness World Records recognized her as the world’s longest-serving flight attendant. She later died at the age of 88.

Photo: By Colin Brown Photography – https://www.flickr.com/photos/145232442@N02/47072084354/, CC BY 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=81315193

Public Perceptions of Older Flight Attendants Differ

Ageism affects how some people view older flight attendants. Former Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker made headlines years ago when he spoke harshly about American carriers and said passengers on them are served by grandmothers. He also bragged that the average age of his own flight attendants was only 26.

Cultural background also shapes reactions. Travelers from countries such as Singapore or Japan may be genuinely confused to see people working in cabin crew roles at an advanced age.

The same coverage describes quality among very senior flight attendants as split between two extremes.

Some provide excellent service with a strong attitude and reflect how service used to be. Others show a poor attitude and clearly do not want to be at work.

Motivations for working so long also differ. Some people enjoy their jobs, stay active through them, and would not know what to do with themselves in retirement. Others must keep working because of the high cost of living and the lack of proper pensions.

Photo: Tobias Gudat

Safety Duties and Recurrent Training Draw Scrutiny

Flight attendants at US carriers are on board primarily for passenger safety. The main concern raised about very senior crew is their ability to perform important safety duties, since at a certain point these tasks become challenging.

Recurrent training requires flight attendants to practice emergency evacuations and other procedures. Those who fail can take the training multiple times.

A story from many years ago described how many attempts United’s most senior flight attendant at the time needed before she passed.
