The announcement follows the FAA’s certification decision, which removes a major regulatory hurdle for the aircraft’s commercial introduction.

The MAX 10 is the largest variant of Boeing’s 737 MAX family. It can accommodate up to 230 passengers in a maximum-density configuration, while typical two-class layouts are expected to seat approximately 185 to 210 passengers.

Its additional seating capacity makes the aircraft a potential option for airlines seeking to increase passenger numbers on busy domestic and international routes without moving to a widebody aircraft. It also positions the MAX 10 against Airbus’s A321 family in the high-capacity single-aisle market.

However, certification does not automatically mean that every ordered aircraft can enter service immediately. Boeing must proceed with production and deliveries, while airlines will need to prepare their aircraft for operational entry into their respective fleets.

Photo: avgeekwithlens/ Harsh Tekriwal

Akasa Air Fleet Expansion

The first MAX 10 delivery will support Akasa Air’s longer-term fleet expansion strategy, which centres on Boeing’s 737 MAX family.

In January 2024, the airline ordered 150 additional 737 MAX aircraft, including the MAX 10, bringing its total Boeing order book to 226 aircraft across different variants.

The larger aircraft could give Akasa Air additional capacity as it develops its domestic and international network.

Its higher passenger capacity may also help the airline serve routes where demand supports larger single-aisle aircraft, although the carrier has not outlined specific routes for its initial MAX 10 operations.

The MAX 10 will complement the airline’s existing 737 MAX fleet rather than introduce an entirely different aircraft family.

Maintaining a fleet built around one manufacturer’s narrowbody aircraft can support operational commonality, although the precise benefits will depend on the airline’s configuration, training and operating requirements.

Akasa Air’s order for 90 MAX 10s also represents a substantial commitment to the aircraft. The pace at which those aircraft enter service will depend on Boeing’s production and delivery schedule, as well as the airline’s own fleet requirements.

Photo: avgeekwithlens/ Harsh Tekriwal

Air India Express Orders

Air India Express has also ordered 10 Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft, giving the Indian market two customers for the high-capacity variant.

The carrier is expected to use the aircraft alongside its existing MAX 8 fleet, adding another option for capacity planning.

Four MAX 10 aircraft intended for Air India Express have reportedly been spotted at Boeing’s factory, but their delivery timelines remain unclear.
